Arzell 'Z.Z.' Hill (1935 - 1984)

Along with Bobby Bland, Little Milton, B.B. King and the like, the name of Z.Z. Hill will be well-known to every blues fan. He created some amazing R&B-based soul dancers in his relatively short life, yet - unlike Bland - his 60s output in the UK is virtually non-existent. In this arena he mirrors another superb blues/R&B singer, Buddy Ace - except that Buddy was even more criminally ignored at the time by British record companies. At least Z.Z. Hill had one early single picked up by a UK label, even if it was Rita and Benny King's tiny R&B label. It was Action that came to the rescue in the late 60s, releasing one-offs by both Z.Z. Hill and Buddy Ace (as well as four singles and an album by Bobby Bland).

Z.Z. began his recording career in 1963, with a couple of singles for his older brother Matt's MH Records, based in Los Angeles; he followed them with a sole outing for the even smaller Mesa label, out of San Antonio, Texas. From late 1964 on, all of Z.Z.'s 60s output was issued on Kent in the States, with fifteen contemporary 45s, and one long-player. Things got a bit complicated after he left Kent, when he recorded various sessions with Quin Ivy, Jerry Williams (Swamp Dogg), and brother Matt again. Work from this period came out seemingly willy-nilly, on Atlantic, Quinvy, Hill, Mankind, and Audrey - with several rehashed and reissued Kent singles thrown in to complicate matters still further. It was only when he moved to United Artists in 1972, that things began to get less muddled. His Columbia years during the late 70s produced the exceptional "Universal Love", and when he joined the Malaco entourage in 1981, he appeared to have found a company after his own heart. His work got slower and bluesier, as evidenced by the titles of some of his albums ("Down Home", "The Rhythm And The Blues", "I'm A Blues Man", and "Bluesmaster"). He sadly died before reaching his forty-ninth birthday, after suffering a heart attack in the aftermath of a car accident.

Today I'm listing some of Hill's early work on the Bihari brothers' Kent/Modern set-up, with much of the material being his own compositions (as on the flip-side here). "No More Doggin' (his sixth Kent single) is an out-and-out stormer from beginning to end. Rosco Gordon recorded the original version way back in 1952, and while it's a fantastic example of the emerging R&B style, this more uptempo remake takes some beating. The flip is a down-tempo blues number. For some reason, the two tracks were the only early Kent sides not to appear on Z.Z.'s debut album ("The Soul Stirring Z.Z. Hill"), although "The Kind Of Love I Want" did later become one of two tracks added on to the UK Kent reissue ("Dues Paid In Full", 1984 - I'm also selling a stunning copy of that LP at the mo).

The A-side has a full youtube posting (not taken from the copy for sale).

The vinyl is close to perfect (visual condition). Both sides play like new (sound quality).

Both labels are immaculate.
