Fred Cash Curtis Mayfield Sam Gooden
The Impressions' line-up, from 1963 to 1970
Welcome to my new-look eBay sales, in which I'm cutting down on the lengthy waffle in order to list as much as possible. You'll find all the information you need to know given above, together with relevant sound links where available.
Trivia: With Jerry Butler at the helm, the original line-up of The Impressions scored first time out in 1958, with the gospel-tinged "For Your Precious Love". It became such a huge hit that Butler decided to take the solo route. Curtis Mayfield took over lead duties, Fred Cash was brought in to make the group back up to a quintet, and the early 60s five-piece Impressions went to ABC-Paramount. In 1963, with the departure of the Brooks' brothers, Mayfield/Gooden/Cash tightened up as the quintessential soul trio. The next seven years were golden ones for The Impressions - first on ABC and then on Curtom - and the list of Chicago group harmony gems that they recorded is far too long to list here. Like Jerry Butler before him, Curtis Mayfield went solo in 1970, although he contined to write for and produce various later line-ups. The list of Impression's lead singers has since included such legendary figures as Leroy Hutson, Ralph Johnson and Nate Evans.
I have a large number of albums by The Impressions, most of which are on US labels, so are remaining in my collection. The only UK album that I'm also hanging on to is "The Impresssions' Big Sixteen" on His Masters Voice, which didn't gain an American release at all. Kent did a sterling job of reissuing many of the group's original albums in the 80s, including their third set from 1964 (here's the Kent version). It was titled after the trio's biggest pop and soul hit of 1964, and like all the trio's material of the period, was arranged by Chicago's finest exponenent of the art - Johnny Pate. As well as some tremendous harmony ballads (the best being "Long, Long Winter"), "Keep On Pushing" includes two magnificent album-only dancers ("I Ain't Supposed" and "Don't Let It Hide"), plus "I Love You (Yeah)" (which I'm also selling on 45 at the mo), and the immaculate "Talkin' About My Baby" (recorded the previous year). Then there's "Theme From Lilies Of The Field", the only non-Mayfield composition on the set, and more widely known as "Amen". As I've said before, Jamaicans went for The Impressions in a very big way, and this set also gave much food for the thought. The early Wailers did a version of the fine ballad "I Made A Mistake" (as did The Five Stairsteps); The Jamaicans covered "Dedicate My Song To You"; while the aching beat ballad, "I've Been Trying", has provided material for Pat Kelly, Johnny Clarke, The Heptones and more, as well as soul's Jerry Butler, The Four Gents, Major Lance, The Fabulous Peps, etc, etc.
Listen to half of the tracks via the above youtube postings (not from the sale copy).
The record is as-new, although there is an extremely faint slleve scuff across part of Side One (visual condition).
Both sides play perfectly throughout (sound quality).
Both labels are immaculate.
The cover is also in tip-top condition.
Although this copy has a very early Kent catalogue number, it was pressed in the EEC. So the LP is a later 80s European pressing.
This record has been played on both sides to verify condition, but there's a full money-back guarantee on all my sales, and I'll refund anyone who isn't totally captivated. The majority are sent by 'signed for' delivery (fully inclusive in the P&P cost).
