A survey of sanctified and country gospel music, featuring 16 rare, vintage recordings.
ORIGIN OJL - 12 Discogs [r5667316]
- Undated re-issue of 1966 original. For reference I bought this in a New Years sale 1981/82
- Whilst the 1966 original had a booklet enclosed, this later edition has the information on the rear of the cover. This includes an essay by Pete Welding, a discography and biographical notes.
- This is Volume 1, 1 disc, 16 tracks, volume two was packaged separately.
Vinyl NM - Barely ever played. No pops. No background noise. Please bare in mind these are OLD recordings and this judgement is based as much on the quality of the gaps between the tracks as the quality of the tracks themselves.
Cover VG+ - Heavy card sleeve still cellophane wrapped, with original price stickers (on cellophane). Some wear on corners of opening/bottom edge purely from storage. New anti static inner.

During the great days of country blues recording - the ten year period 1924-34 - large numbers of recordings of (black) religious music , rural and urban, were made as part of the record industry's "Race Record" programs aimed at (black) audiences. In many respects the recordings made by the popular preachers and singers of spirituals and gospel music were conspicuously more successful than those of the urban and country blues performers of the period. Religious records often sold in very large quantities in comparison with blues records sales, and what's more, sold steadily and consistently in the bargain; Religious records in fact soon became one of the staples of the recording industry, a situation which persists even today, (gospel records rarely have the spectacular initial success of the 'Hit' popular records but they sell well over relatively long periods of time).

DON'T BE PUT OFF BY THE COVER... ...this is not an album of earnest anthropological recordings that sound as though they were made with a tin can and a bit of string. These are wonderful, vibrant and 'full bodied' recordings that offer as much today as they did 80 years ago.
Cover NM – Still cellophane wrapped. Clean flat no shelf wear. Inner sleeve crisp.

Given that Ebay is an unseen, trust based marketplace, my assessment's will be conservative, detailed and based upon listening to the records for sale. As with most sellers my gradings are based upon the Goldmine Standard (abridged and paraphrased from Discogs below).
Near Mint (NM or M-)
A nearly perfect record. A NM- record has more than likely never been played, and the vinyl will play perfectly, with no imperfections during playback. I am unlikely to ever use this grading for vinyl quality unless I KNOW a record to be new, unplayed and probably still wrapped.
A 45 RPM or EP sleeve should have no more than the most minor defects, such as any sign of slight handling. An LP cover should have no creases, folds, seam splits, cut-out holes, or other noticeable similar defects. The same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sleeves, etc.
Very Good Plus (VG+)
A Very Good Plus record will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Defects should be more of a cosmetic nature, surfaces may show slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experiences.
The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable. Picture sleeves will have some slight wear, lightly turned up corners, or a slight seam split. An LP cover may have slight signs of wear, and may be marred by an indentation or sample distribution cut. In general, if not for a couple of minor things wrong with it, this would be Near Mint.
Very Good (VG)
Many of the defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG disc. Surface noise will be evident upon playing, but will not overpower the music otherwise. Groove wear will start to be noticeable, as with light scratches that will affect the sound.
Labels may be marred by writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same will be true of picture sleeves or LP covers. However, it will not have all of these problems at the same time.
Good (G), Good Plus (G+)
In truth I wouldn’t usually bother listing vinyl in this condition, that is with ‘noticeable surface noise and ticks’ although I would consider listing an unusual record with a cover in this condition where ‘seam splits, especially at the bottom or on the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear, or other defects will be present’
