Description

Label:           Columbia Catalog #:       DB 7531 Track Listing:

  1. Casting My Spell On You
  2. Bye Birdie Fly

Formed in Manchester in 1964, THE MEASLES were a raw-sounding beat group led by singer Stan Hoffman. His real name was Stan Dulson, but he soon adopted the stage name of Stan Hoffman, and the ”Red” moniker was bestowed upon him by fans because of his hair colour! In addition to lead vocalist Hoffman, the group had Jomo Smith on lead guitar, Wyn Davis on rhythm guitar, Dave Earl on bass and Ray Mondell on drums.

The group landed a recording deal with Columbia (EMI) and the 45 on offer here, "Casting My Spell On You, was their debut release issued on March 18, 1965. Produced by Mickie Most, ”Casting My Spell On You” is a superb up-tempo Freakbeat treatment of a tune covered by Johnny Otis back in 1959. The flip, ”Bye Birdie Fly”, is quite similar in style – a harmonica-led tear-up co-penned by manager Tony Stuart and Stan Hoffman.

As you'll see from the photo, this is unconditionally guaranteed to be the ORIGINAL 1964 UK 1st DEMO pressing made with a 4-prong pushout centre, so you can forget about having to settle for one of those dodgy so-called "limited re-pressings" (many of which are actually bootlegs) that are flooding the market.

A TRULY fantastic double-sider, any fan of The Measles, the Mod and Freakbeat scenes or 60s music in general will simply have to have this item in their collection!!!!

We have played both sides of this single and it plays lovely
