Sam Cooke, Night Beat, 1963 RCA Victor LSP-2709, rare first issue. 12” vinyl 33-1/3 rpm RCA Dynagroove stereo album.  Black RCA Victor Nipper Dog label.  Original RCA paper record sleeve.  Night Beat was Cooke’s next to last studio recording before his untimely 1964 death by homicide at age 32, and features a young 16-year old Billy Preston on organ.

 CONDITION/GRADING:  Not professionally graded.  I have graded to the best of my ability using Goldmine guidelines.  Grading is done by listening to LP and visually inspecting LP & cover:

LP:  Very Good Plus (VG+). Excellent playability, with good clear sound on both sides.  Side 1: Just some very faint occasional background hiss that does not detract from listening experience; no other audible surface noise.  Side 2: One small skip each on tracks 1 and 2 with some light hiss/pops.  Little to no other surface noise on remaining tracks.  Excellent vinyl Side 1 with no visible scratches/scuffs.  Very light scattered scratching Side 2, with small blip to vinyl end of Track 1 and middle of Track 4.  Label clean both sides with no spindle wear.

Cover/Sleeve: Very Good Plus (VG+)  Bright cover with good gloss and minimal signs of handling.  Light ring wear and a few spots light paper scuff along edges, with one larger ½” x ¼” spot at top center front.  Light bumping/creasing to corners.  No seam splits.  Original paper sleeve is clean with no seams splits; one crease to one top corner and light wrinkling.

Night Beat “is the twelfth studio album by American R&B, soul, and rock and roll singer and songwriter Sam Cooke.  Produced by Hugo & Luigi, the album was released in August 1963 in the United States by RCA Victor.  It has been featured in "best-of" lists by contemporary music critics and regarded as one of Sam Cooke's best.  Cooke and a small group of studio musicians — pianist Ray Johnson, organist Billy Preston (who was only 16 at the time of recording), lead guitarist Barney Kessell, alternating drummers Hal Blaine and Ed Hall, bassist Cliff Hils and Clif White, and Rene Hall on rhythm guitar — cut Night Beat in three days during late-night recording sessions at RCA Victor Studios in Hollywood in February 1963”. “According to John Bush of Allmusic, "Saddled with soaring strings and vocal choruses for maximum crossover potential, Sam Cooke's solo material often masked the most important part of his genius—his glorious voice—so the odd small-group date earns a special recommendation in his discography.”  Al Kooper of Goldmine wrote: "This is intimate Sam Cooke and his favorite musicians having some genuine fun in the studio, with obviously no eye toward ramming up the pop charts ... Each song is like another moody painting always in the appropriate, tasteful frame”. The Guardian included it on their 2007 list of "1000 Albums to Hear Before You Die", writing: "[Cooke] brought a spiritual intensity to every cute mainstream confection he recorded, but his beautiful voice was never more mesmerizing than on this hushed and gracious final album”. Shipping Note: I have cleaned the vinyl LP with specialized vinyl groove cleaner to remove dust and dirt.  It will be shipped with a protective polyethylene album sleeve, in a sturdy cardboard LP mailer with protective inserts, for safe shipping.

INTERNATIONAL BUYERS PLEASE NOTE: Contact me for a shipping quote before bidding/paying because due to some late international shipments sent First Class I recommend shipping all international sales by Priority International unless requested otherwise, so that packages can be tracked for delivery.  Whenever possible international shipments will be sent Flat Rate Priority to save on shipping charges.  If you request economy First Class International for small packages please be aware that delivery time for 1st Class International shipments can vary from 3-4 days to up to up to 4-5 weeks, and that First Class International packages cannot be tracked if a package is late or lost.  Due to size, some items cannot be sent First Class International.
