Another Carnegie Mellon First LP

CMU Senior Banquet

Original 1969 US stereo private pressing issued by CMU (catalog # AIP-1055).

Scarce US pop-psych/college folk-rock from Carnegie Mellon University. This record is mentioned in the Acid Archives book (Patrick Lundborg/Ron Moore) but is not well-known (at least not as it should be.) Recorded at (or for) the 1969 CMU Senior Banquet, with no band or musicians credited aside from the composer and writer Fred Albitz. Otherwise the group is just described as CMU alumni, "two guitarists and a mini-skirted singer."

There are 6 songs of bright and catchy poppy sunshine psychedelia -- both male and female vocals -- with a sort of shambling, seemingly amateurish, charm. But they're actually sophisticated, well-crafted pop-sike songs with a pretty freaky subtext...

This album was conceived by and produced by the CMU Alumni Office for the 1969 senior class as a fundraising tool to get the seniors to think about pledging money to the school after they graduate. That fact makes this album even more interesting... all these songs are subtle and not-so-subtle (bordering on creepy) attempts to win over a bunch of disaffected hippie college students... urging them not to "drop out of sight", but to go out and make enough money to give a tidy sum back to Carnegie Mellon, "and lend a hand to the helping hand that once helped you." Fundraising is the sole purpose of this record, which was never sold commercially nor made in order to help promote the music careers of the musicians or the band... they're not even credited! This record was created just to give out to the 1969 Senior Class and that was it. Read the crazy notes on the back cover to get the whole picture.

These songs are recorded absolutely beautifully... stunning sonic clarity, a bright and punchy sound, upfront guitar and ringing vocal harmonies. (The flipside of the LP is bagpipe music by The Kiltie Symphony Band And Pipers.)
