If so, great, but if not— well, so long as you are in love with music and your hi-fi set (even if you don’t build it yourself), you will love MUSIC FOR HI-FI LOVERS as presented by Hal Otis and his Orchestra. Hal Otis, "the hottest fiddler in the business,” and one of the nation’s leading jazz personalities, is also one of the top ar- rangers and performers of dance music in the ro- mantic manner, and it is in this role that he and his band appear in the dozen favorites heard in this recording. Hal and his orchestra, playing these same tunes and arrangements, are a regular feature in the Cafe Bonaparte of Chicago’s Hotel Sheraton-Black- stone. Now, in this new, brilliantly recorded album, they are ready to play for you whenever you wish. So turn down the lights and turn up your hi-fi set and let Hal’s music and Westminster’s sound convert your living room into the perfect setting for HI-FI LOVERS. Hal Otis had intended, as a youngster, to become a classical violinist. But as a teen-ager he heard the Benny Goodman band, and immediately gave up classical music for jazz and popular numbers. He ran away from home in Hammond, Indiana, hoping to get to New York to join music by way of Major Bowes' radio program. Before reaching New York, however, he got side-tracked at Grand Rapids, where he became a tavern troubadour, playing violin and accordion. A few years later he did reach New York, where Gertrude Niesen and Dave Garroway signed him up to play violin for their various the- atrical and television ventures. Then Stan Kenton heard Hal playing in the Preview Lounge and asked him to join his band. For five months Hal Otis was featured violinist with the Kenton band. Then he decided that he was ready to strike out on his own, and he left Kenton to get a group together. With this band Hal Otis’ musical activities have centered on the Hotel Sheraton-Blackstone in Chicago, begin- ning in the Balinese Room and continuing in the new Cafe Bonaparte which has replaced it. From time to time Hal Otis and his Orchestra take time off from the Cafe Bonaparte to fill other engage- ments, including appearances on the Dave Garroway Television Show, on the NBC and CBS networks, at the Hotel Sherman in Chicago, the Forest Park Hotel in St. Louis, and the Violina Room in Mil- waukee. The members of the Hal Otis Orchestra, in addition to Hal himself, are Joe Vito, accordion; Nicke Addante, drums; Lennie Miller, bass; and Johnnie Gray, guitar. Harold Jovien of Esquire Magazine says: "A new jazz thrill is the highly creative fiddling of Hat Otis what ideas and execution. He’s my replacement for Stuff Smith.' Downbeat Magazine speaks of Hal Otis’ "fine creative talent”, and Chicago’s en- tertainment guide Where says that Hal Otis and his Orchestra satisfy everybody by playing "just enough society music to keep the blue bloods happy, just enough jazz to keep himself happy, just enough rhumbas, tangos, and pop tunes to keep everybody else happy.” You’ll be happy too, with Hal’s music for HI-FI LOVERS
