acquired sealed from the artist, played once. recorded 1982, released on smith's own MIFF label. spirited medium>large ensemble performances of three smith compositions & horace silver's "ecaroh." many of these musicians are familiar to me only from the two earlier composer's workshop l/ps on strata east. this record btw is scarcer, in my experience, than the strata easts. smith's arranging style reflects his extensive history with gil evans, sam rivers & mingus, his orchestral use of percussion a reminder that he co-founded max roach's m'boom. furthermore he's played & recorded w/ everyone from aretha to bill dixon to pearls before swine to tony williams' lifetime to count basie to van morrison (vibraphone & percussion on _astral weeks_ no less). the title track here includes a crazy recitation by smith about "accidently" stepping on crickets while high ("again"). smith, drums & percussion; george barrow, tenor sax; garnett brown, trombone; vincent chancey, french horn; omar clay, drums & percussion; johnny coles, trumpet; sharon freeman, french horn; al gibbons, tenor sax; gary gordon, baritone sax; jack jeffers, bass trombone; howard johnson, baritone sax; greg maker, bass; dave moore, bass; norman spiller, trumpet; bross townsend, piano; courtney wynter, soprano sax.
