Congressman Adam Clayton Powell. A minister, spell-binding speaker and the first black Congressman from New York State, Powell was a strong ally of John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson and one of the most powerful politicians of the 1960s. He helped spearhead many key components - especially in public education - of the New Frontier and Great Society. In the late 1960s he came under fire on ethics charges. He was tossed from Congress but battled back to reclaim his seat.
This record was his "Message to the World." In it he touts his accomplishments, defends himself against the ethics allegations and lays out his vision for a more just and equal America. Photos of JFK, LBJ and others inside, plus a record of Powell's legislative accomplishments.
