3x7” box set Most of this early material was originally released between 1965 and 1971 as extended play 7” singles that accompanied Rag Baby magazine as cheap promotion for anti-war sentiments (Rag Baby was a left wing pamphlet magazine). It is worth checking out for the alternative versions of songs (like “I-Feel-Like-I’m- Fixing-To-Die”) that later showed up on their Vanguard albums. The 7” singles come with their original artwork/sleeves. Liner notes and lyrics included.
COLLECTORS ITEMS is a compilation of the three EPs of protest songs which Country Joe McDonald released between 1965 and 1971. It includes solo performances, as well as his more famed work with The Fish and with Grootna. COLLECTORS ITEMS also includes two songs by Bay Area folk singer Peter Krug who shared space on one of McDonald's EPs.

Collectors items, sure, but more specifically, this is an anthology of three low budget self-produced EPs, originally sold at Fish gigs or along with Country Joe McDonald's mimeographed folk music magazine Rag Baby-- in other words, DIY several years before the first generation of English punks conceived the term. The first two EPs here--one, a loose folkie session recorded in somebody's living room, the second, featuring early studio versions of songs on the band's official LP debut (including several takes of the ubiquitous "Feel Like I'm Fixin' to Die Rag"--are the real reason to purchase this CD.

They're priceless '60s time capsules that as an interesting historical bonus feature the only recorded evidence of the band's original drummer, John Francis Gunning, a hemp enthusiast who, according to Berkeley legend, felt that playing a song the same way twice was a violation of his artistic freedom. The third EP, recorded in conjunction with a travelling anti-war show (with Jane Fonda), by contrast is rather conventional and earnest, although it does benefit from more professional sound.
