Finding a mono copy of THIS Uruguayan '65 issue = near IMPOSSIBLE
The lyrics represented a quantum leap in terms of thoughtfulness, maturity, and complex ambiguities. Musically, too, it was a substantial leap forward, with intricate folk-rock arrangements that reflected the increasing influence of Dylan and the Byrds. The group and George Martin were also beginning to expand the conventional instrumental parameters of the rock group, using a sitar on "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)," Greek-like guitar lines on "Michelle" and "Girl," fuzz bass on "Think for Yourself," and a piano made to sound like a harpsichord on the instrumental break of "In My Life." While John and Paul were beginning to carve separate songwriting identities at this point, the album is full of great tunes, from "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" and "Michelle" to "Girl," "You Won't See Me," "I'm Looking Through You," (a classic raver!) and "In My Life" (voted by the public as the best Beatles song - ever!). George Harrison was also developing into a fine songwriter with his two contributions, "Think for Yourself." By the way, the mentioned above "I'm Looking Through You" features varied elements, and is peppered with nasty fuzz bass, exotic sitar, cartoonishly sped-up piano that sounds like harpsichord.
- All in all, the album reveals a creative scope and willingness to experiment so revolutionary it can now only be termed "Beatlesque."
- Characteristically, they achieved a new musical sophistication and a greater thematic depth without sacrificing any of their pop appeal status...Though some might argue that the Beatles' unprecedented evolution from British Invasion pin-ups to pop music visionaries began with BEATLES FOR SALE, RUBBER SOUL is without a doubt the first album to definitively put the Fab Four in the running for Greatest Band Ever.

Those were the words that George Martin said in The Beatles Anthology documentary...and rightly so! Rubber Soul was a breakaway for the group, both technically and musically.
- More cynical, less bubbly lyrics, a la Dylan. "You Won't See Me," "Think For Yourself," "I'm Looking Through You" "Nowhere Man" and "Run For Your Life" are just among the far cries from "She Loves You" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand." Even John gets introspective with "In My Life," a song that he wrote when he was just turning 25...no longer quite so young.
One standout track is "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)." Here, George Harrison plays a sitar, the first time ever that an Indian instrument was ever heard on pop or rock album. George started getting into Indian music while they were filming HELP! during the Indian restaurant scene. Later that year, he flew out to L.A. to meet Jim (later Roger) McGuinn and David Crosby from The Byrds. When he told them about this new form of music he discovered, they mentioned Ravi Shankar's music to him...something, and someone, that literally changed the rest of his life.
What's amazing about this album is the amount of time it took to record it to meet the Christmas '65 deadline...just over a month! When 1966 arrived, The Beatles did something they hadn't done since first recording for EMI in 1962...they took a break. For three months, they did no recording, no concerts, no TV or radio appearances. It gave them time enough to record their next masterpiece...REVOLVER!

CONDITION: - The cover: rated: EX (excellent) in encased thick plastic just as released in 1965 ... very fragile manufacturing, in nearly all cases turns up (if at all) with tears and especially wrinkles. This copy is still special, despite age browning to BACK cover far right spine, otherwise as nice as you could hope for 57 years onward, from Uruguay... Has vibrant colors (no fade, completely solid seams, no bends, no writing, no delete marks. Won't find a better 57 year old MONO Odeon/EMI 14-track pressing of the Beatles Rubber Soul artifact!
- The vinyl: Rated: VG- various light scuffs, hairlines, though it tracks without skips or jumps, though with surface ... a VERY RARE 1965 "Odeon" UK-MONO via Uruguay South America first pressing ... the (MONO) ODEON RECORDS LABELS are surprisingly clean despite little spindle hole marks, not bad at all ...very faint Uruguayan official stamp on side one only.
A cool addition to anyone's music library!
