7 & 3/4 SKANK
original Justice League pressing
The opening bars of "Cow Thief Skank" give fair warning of the strange aural experience that is to ensue. After being treated to a brief section of an unrelated R&B song, mooing noises sound over the rhythm of the Inspirations 1968 recording, "Stand By Me". Seconds later, dee jay Charlie Ace makes his entrance as a victime of a bovine robbery, relating the theft of one of his cattle to his spouse Dinah, to the accompaniment of an instrumental section from Carlton & The Shoes' "Better Days" and later, the instrumental piece "Musical Transplant". Perry's work was never so weird and wonderful as on this piece of musical mayhem. The song was written and innovatingly spliced together by Perry to mock producer Winston "Niney" Holness. As David Katz writes in his amazing book PEOPLE FUNNY BOY -The Genius Of Lee "Scratch" Perry, in the section titled, BUILDING THE ARK: BEAT DOWN BABYLON "If 'Bucky Skank', 'Freak Out Skank' and 'IPA Skank' were peculiar, 'Cow Thief Skank' was something else entirely. The lyrics of this duet by Charlie Ace and Scratch were aimed straight at Niney, who is referred to cryptically in the song as Moccasin, a name Scratch used to deride him at the time due to his sporting unfashionable footwear. Legend has it that Scratch learned Niney had stolen a cow in his youth and cut the tune to ridicule him, alluding to the notion that Niney had his finger and thumb chopped off as a result of the robbery. Its insulting lyrics (which Niney considered playful) notwithstanding, it is the rhythm of 'Cow Thief Skank' that is truly noteworthy, as it marks another first in the history of recorded sound. As is seen more readily on the version side '7 and 3/4 Skank', (it) is a composite creation, splicing together three different Upsetter rhythms to create something unique beneath the toasting and mooing sounds. The cut-up technique employed by Perry on this tune...predates similar techniques that later appeared in new wave and hip-hop by many years - perhaps with a considerably higher degree of finesse than shown in most of the material created in other genres." Another one of Lee Perry's greatest breakthrough treasures. Musical wonders from the Wonder Mon.
The ORIGINAL Justice League Jamaican vinyl is in VG+ condition with no warp and no skips. No handwriting anywhere. Still in its original Jamaican sleeve which reads "FEDERAL RECORDS ANOTHER HIT!" The label reads: 'Produced And Directed By Upsetter Wonder Man'.
