"Little Bitty Pretty One" was written and originally recorded by Bobby Day, and popularised by Thurston Harris in 1957. It has been covered by Frankie Lymon in 1958, Clyde McPhatter in 1962, the Jackson Five in 1972, Cliff Richard in 1983, Huey Lewis and the News in 1994, and Billy Gilman in 2000. The song has also been covered by The Doobie Brothers and has become a crowd favourite at their shows. The song is unusual in that the entire song is played with a single chord, F.
This song appears in a recent commercial for Lipton's Green Iced Tea and also appears in the movie Matilda, in a scene where the title character (played by Mara Wilson) gleefully uses her telekinesis to move everything in the room.
The Thurston Harris version appears in the movie Christine and is also included on the soundtrack.
In 1991, Jacqueline Byrd, the widow of songwriter Bobby Day, told lawmakers that she had intercepted a letter addressed to her husband. The letter from the Copyright Office stated that the copyright to "Little Bitty Pretty One" was not renewed, thus ending royalty payments to Day and the song's publisher. Byrd never told her husband, who was dying of cancer, about the letter. If the song's copyright were renewed, Byrd and her four children would have received royalty payments until 2037.
