~ condition ~
records are in Excellent Condition (they almost look
Near Mint) & have been fully play tested and sound great
with no skips or repeats & just typical quiet 78rpm surface
noise & are clean & shiny with almost no wear (there are a
few superficial light scuffs that do not interfere with the
sound in any way at all) & the labels are shiny & clean
these records have really nice loud & clear tone
the cover is in Excellent Condition with bold bright
printing and has no writing, markings or seam splits
the spine is fully intact with nice bold gold-embossed
printing (the spine on these types of 78rpm albums
is usually damaged although there is some light edgewear
and some light chipping to the left edge of the pasted-on
front cover, but overall this is in nice shape
and it's nice to see a copy like this
the inner-pouches for these three records do have
some wear at the outer-edge where the record have
worn through at the centers, but this does not
detract from how nice this set is
~ David Stone Martin ~
illustrator David Stone Martin was one of the most
prolific and influential graphic designers of the postwar
era, creating over 400 mostly Jazz Lp Covers with his
signature hand-drawn style that perfectly captured the
energy and spontaneity of the idiom. he was from Chicago
and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and began his
career assisting social realist painter Ben Shahn designing
murals for the '33 World's Fair & then became the TVA
art director & also worked as an artist for Life Magazine
during WW II until later entering the music biz through his
longtime friendship with Norman Granz designing covers
for his Verve, Norgran Clef & Down Home record labels
as well as hundreds of other album covers and is the
most famous and collected artist of all jazz era and
his work has exhibited at Metropolitan Museum
of Art and at MOMA in New York City

this record is a Norman Granz production and is the
first in a series of recordings he put together & produced
called "Jazz at the Philharmonic" or JATP recorded at
Los Angeles' Philharmonic Auditorium & other locations
on tours between 1944-1949 and are considered the first
widely distributed Live Jam Session recordings (until this
point considered to be pretty out-there and avant-garde)
becaming a huge contribution to be-bop jazz & the JATP
tours continued to be popular annually through the late-50's
featuring the best jazz players of the day. After a short time
Granz took over the release of these recordings founding his
own Norgran & Down Home labels. He also later founded
the Verve and Pablo labels, making him a fundamental figure
in American jazz music & he is also remembered for his
notable anti-racist position and for the battles he
consequently fought for his artists
