Here, by gum, is/are THE FIRST FIVE (!) ALBUMS BY FRANK ZAPPA AND THE MOTHERS (or maybe the 1st 4 and the 6th— can’t remember if Uncle Meat came before Cruising’ with Ruben and the Jets, maybe you know). This could be a great way to start your Frank Zappa/ Mothers of Invention LP collection, and— God willing — a great way to end mine. Someone who’s not a huge Zappa fan: me, as it turns out. And I’ve had these for YEARS, carting them around from house to house, and NEVER listening to them, and that needs to stop. So on the block they go. Condition: as shown, think VG/VG+ for covers and discs, the discs are probably better than the covers, because I NEVER PLAY THESE— please don’t make me play grade them. “Detailed” descriptions below:
FREAK OUT: MONO Verve copy, “Map” cover. V5005-2 blue label. Matrix numbers: MG-296, MG-297rev., MG-298rev., MG-299rev. Some ring and edge wear, each jacket has 4” split at top front. Records have spindle marks and visible signs of use. I listened to side 3 last week, expecting the worst— but it played and sounded really good: plenty of life and not much noise.
ABSOLUTELY FREE: stereo Verve copy, V6-5013A on the Record (white label) and V6-5013x on the jacket. Purchased new by me in 1975, last played sometime in the 1980s. Vinyl looks great— such flaws as I can see are straight from the pressing plant. No splits on the sleeve, slight ring wear beginning.
WE’RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY: blue label Verve stereo V6 5045, MGS 1251 matrix. Some sort of paint splash on back cover- maybe they were painting protest signs and listening to it. Sticker cover, insert missing. Never listened to this after picking it up in Cambridge MA in the 1980s.
LUMPY GRAVY: black label Verve stereo V6-8741, matrix MGS-1069-1 so maybe a first pressing, or? Ring wear on cover, cut-out in lower left corner. Inner sleeve not original, it lacks the cutout dot. Apparently I spent 10.00 on this because that’s what it says on the inner sleeve. Picked up on the same 1980s shopping trip as the previous album. Played it once, didn’t like it, don’t remember any scratches or skips.
UNCLE MEAT: Bizarre/Reprise Stereo 2024 (30871-30874), matrix 3087x MS-2024. Maybe first Bizarre pressing, it’s set up for record changers (side 1/side 4 on 1 disc, side 2/side 3 on the other). Original inner sleeves. Records look good, as does sleeve, with just the beginnings of ring wear.
So there you have it. I could have just said “5 records, condition is used”, but I didn’t, I tried to give you the skinny. I listen to a lot of records, and have always had good turntables: these guys, if I played them at all, would have been played on an AR XA or a Rega Planar 3 with Grado MI or SAE HOMC— no “all-in-one” console changers on my resume! I’ll start the bidding at FORTY-TWO DAMN U.S. DOLLARS— ONLY 6 bucks a disc. Again, these aren’t reissues, they are first pressings or nearly so, back when FZ was competing against Gary Puckett and Sgt Barry Sadler for record sales. They will never make more of these, get’ em while you can. Shipping is a flat 10 bucks in the CONUS, most likely via good ol’ USPS Priority.
THE FINE PRINT: NO RETURNS; be more knowledgable about what you are buying than me, since I have mostly ignored these records for 30 years. Don’t bid so much that they have to be perfect as well as original. Description is as thorough as I can make it and take it (take photos, that is). No bidders with less than 10 positive feedback.
