#82030 Carmen Melis, Torna a Surriento. Very early 1-sided operatic Diamond Disc from 1913, most likely one of the earlier ones that was provided in a box instead of a sleeve. Early bonded celluloid recording surface to a baked wood powder core, considered the best acoustic records ever produced due to their nearly non-existent surface noise and excellent fidelity. These early "frosted" label discs are getting increasingly harder and harder to find in playable condition. The recording grooves are in E+ condition, and play beautifully. Condition report of reverse: blank reverse has one lamination crack as shown in pictures. Condition report of recording side: There are lamination cracks in the lead-in area at 1-O'Clock, 5-O'Clock, and 6-O'Clock which come up to the recording (up to wall of first groove), but do not affect recording at all. These cracks run parallel to the grooves, and will not spread further. They do not affect grooves at all. For the preservation of the record, it should be played on modern equipment, and not with a heavy diamond stylus. The performance is lovely, and a real treat to the ears. I audition all records on a modern turntable with a lightweight sapphire stylus. RECORDS WILL BE PACKED PROPERLY between several sheets of cardboard, surrounded by packing peanuts, in a sturdy box.
