Description

Here for sale is a very rare copy of Zappow’s legendary 7” single from 1977. Made at Black Ark Studios with the help of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, but released on their own Zappow label, this is a fantastic couple of sides: Scratch imbued the two tracks with a Joe Meek giddiness, and the rhythm track crunches like a German mix of Kraftwerk – the bass is like a seven foot bass marimba. Gated. However, there is a price to pay for all of this crunch: noise. Surface noise on this disc is a given, unfortunately, but IMHO the loudness of the vinyl rides you right over it. No re-master engineer has got close to this original, probably not even tried. But as this single is rare, it is essential to explain why it’s become so coveted.

The item is a one-owner piece, having been purchased new in early 1977 from Liverpool’s Probe Records by singer/author Julian Cope. He then kept it safe and warm always with his best vinyl. The two sides have just been played through and sound crisp and clean, save for one click on the A-side, and a couple of very minor clicks on the Version. It’s a canny beast for anyone who really needs it!
