Warren Zevon's third album is where his dark wit, rock & roll bite and pop smarts found their sharpest balance. The Los Angeles songwriter takes his skewed storytelling to extremes, from the macabre humour of 'Excitable Boy' and the supernatural swagger of 'Werewolves of London' to the chilling anti-hero ballad 'Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner'. Yet it isn't all gallows laughs - 'Accidentally Like a Martyr' remains one of his most affecting love songs, while 'Johnny Strikes Up the Band' and 'Tenderness on the Block' carry a breezy West Coast ease. Even stranger moments like 'Nighttime in the Switching Yard' and the political lament of 'Veracruz' underscore his range. Remastered from the original tapes and pressed on heavy vinyl, this reissue restores the record's bite and sheen, a reminder of why Zevon's twisted, literate rock has never quite lost its edge.
