Label Conditions: Both very clean and highly attractive with only light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Indeed side one has barely any at all and both retain a high degree of freshness.

Cat Number: RSLP 6370.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Weight of this Record: 115 grams. This is below average for Reprise albums of this era, this being totally honest – this works both ways – happy to reitterate the heavy ones and likewise the lighter ones.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Original Year of Release: 1970.

Rarity: The original first pressing on the tri-coloured Reprise label is quite rare. It proved to be the final Zappa album issued on this label and was quite a late one on this format. Both ‘Chunga’s Revenge’ and ‘Weasel’s Ripped My Flesh’ albums both appeared in 1970 with RSLP prefixes, but they went immediately to the new tan format design. Now this copy, by rights should not really exist and I believe it’s the very first instance I have ever seen one. This tri-coloured example carries both the original matrixes as well as the new Kinney ones (as seen below). Now it is not too unusual for first issue albums on new formats to include both the previous matrix details as well as the new ones, but it’s far more unusual for the original labels to include the correct RSLP matrixes along with the K- prefix Kinney new ones. I am not sure if I have ever seen this before on any album let alone this one. I really believe this to be a rare and unusual copy.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High Indeed: within Zappa’s vast catalogue, this has to be one of the most wear-prone covers. The rarely, if ever escapes often significant ringwear. This one has the least I have seen for several years (my personal copy accepted). The only reason can be is this original label copy is pressed far lighter than most RSLP copies. Every cloud has a silver lining, as the saying goes.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Some of Zappa’s finest instrumentals are ‘Sandwiched’ inbetween two slices of doo-wop trivia: ‘WPLJ’ (wine, port and lemon juice, and ‘Valerie’. ‘Igor’s Boogie’ was written for Stravinsky, while ‘Holiday in Berlin’ was for the militant German students who had invaded the stage in October 1968, demanding that Zappa make an anti-capitalist statement (Zappa later said their leaders wanted him to tell the audience to burn down a nearby American forces base). ‘Aybe Sea’ was a tinkling piano piece that again relied on Ian Underwood’s sensitive touch. The centrepiece of this wonderful album is ‘The Little House I Used to Live In’, which occupies most of side two. It’s similar in structure to the Hot Rats album, with blistering solos from Sugarcane Harris’s electric violin - an awesome electric storm - and the finale is an organ solo frenzy by Frank himself. After ‘Little House’ a short dialogue between Zappa and a member of the audience, this always intrigues me as you cannot really here clearly what the heckler is saying, but Frank’s lines are: “Everyone here is wearing a uniform, don’t kid yourself’’ and “You will hurt your throat, stop it’’ - he shuts up. This is a very fine all-round copy, and includes those unusual matrixes. The record plays very well indeed with the only light surface sound, briefly on the quiet piano opening on side two, and being honest, I have seldom heard any copy that plays this fragile intro perfectly. The cover is very nice indeed and shows only light traces of wear. A copy most Zappa fans will enjoy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated, gatefold format with matt finish, it was printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd and has the original ‘Patents pending’ text.

Cover Front: Very colourful and bizarrely strange, this retains rich colour with no fading with barely any creasing or grubbiness. Under light, a few minor surface marks are just seen, but this front sets a high standard.

Cover Back: The most apparent feature of this one is the lack of deep, penetrating ringwear which this cover suffers from freely, few will ever avoid it, any here is very light and faint. A little light rubbing with a few fine marks but creasing has again been avoided. Certainly one of the better backs I have seen for some considerable time.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Beautiful condition again and totally devoid of any wear or ageing.

Top Edges: Near wear-free up to the corner tips.

Bottom Edges: Mainly light, patchy rubbing on the front edge, a little more towards the corners.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Quite sharp with little wear or thickening, both guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on the back edge.

Spine and Text: A very fine spine that was made much thicker than the subsequent Kinney reprintings. Solid and straight, any compression or tilt mild and folded square. All text is perfect and unworn and even the white surface has avoided any grubbiness.

Corners: Tip rubbing is only modestly light, even the spine ends look neat which is somewhat unusual on this one. Very fine shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult indeed to find much better. This visually pleasing item should please most collectors. Note: the UK versions of this album never included any insert.

The Inner Sleeve: The plain white, unlined inner is included in very good condition. Both the open window are crisp and neat and the edges secure. The odd light mark and some moderate discolouration with a smallish tear tothe top opening edge. It includes the text ‘Patent Applied For’. Not the very best inner sleeve to be fair, but I still prefer to offer the original it came with rather than swapping them round.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, jet black but lighter pressed than you normall associate with the tri-coloured Reprise label. Without doubt, this is a ‘transition’ pressing that included the original RSLP and K- matrixes but clearly the wrong labels have been used or they simply used up stock. I am certain very few of these variants will even exist. A record clearly played little, a tiny few likely pressing marks at the very start of side two are the culprits for the very brief sounds heard at the beginning of ‘Little House…’. Little else to fault with any hairline traces few and very faint indeed. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This unusual, and potentiall rare variant pressing plays up to it’s high visual grading for most-all with practically nothing to fault and this is a difficult album at times with some very quiet passages. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no major pops or clicks were noted, but as stated further up, the very start of side two has brief sounds from the tiny pressing marks mentioned within the visual paragraph. This has massive highs and lows in frequency range: from the lower bass notes of the organ finale to Harris’s screeching electric violin, always a very difficult instrument to track and maintain. This plays with no clipping or echo at all, all is very sharp and focused throughout. Same goes for the solo piano parts, these again are very crisp. This album is predominately instrumental and only lightly played, early pressed copies usually make the grade required for top sound – later pressings were more varied. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure, only the brief crackle at the beginning of side two is any sort of issue. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled. Very little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, I have all too rarely heard the gentle piano intro on side two play quiet, this is very difficult indeed. This copy could prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits high recommendation – any doubts however, do not bid.

End Piece: My regular buyers will already know my love of Zappa’s music and this is up there with the best. I only offer strong copies of his albums, ‘Mother People’ only deserve the best and this is certainly another fine copy and potentially a rare variant pressing. A notoriously difficult title to find clean – that’s both cover and record – this one is well worthy of strong consideration.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
