This is a hard-to-find and excellent sounding R&B record by the great Young Jessie (also known as Obie Jessie). Both of these recordings are not available anywhere except on this single.
Young Jessie originally recorded "Mary Lou" for Modern Records in 1955 with backup vocals by The Cadets (the group that included future Coasters member Will "Dub" Jones who sang lead on The Cadets' biggest hit "Stranded In The Jungle"). This version of "Mary Lou" was recorded for Mercury Records in 1963 and has a more bluesier feel than the original and with backup vocals by a female group.
Young Jessie wrote both sides of this record. Lester Sill and Steve Douglas produced the record. Jack Nitzsche arranged both songs. Lester Sill later worked with Phil Spector and they formed Philles Records together.
Besides being a great solo singer, Young Jessie also recorded with The Coasters in 1957 on their hits "Searchin'" and "Young Blood" and had previously recorded with The Flairs (along with Richard Berry and Cornell Gunter).
Young Jessie didn't release much after 1964 until 1972 when he released a record as by "Obe Jessie And The Seeds Of Freedom" on Stone Dogg Records. He also released two jazz albums in 1995 and 2002 as Obie Jessie.
