Label/Format: Atlantic – original red and maroon (‘Plum’) format (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with spindle on the lesser side of moderate. This from the same collection as the stunning Fragile I am offering, the labels suggest a few more plays than that one, but the playing surfaces and sound quality are of the same incredible standard. The spindle marks are mostly fine and show little unless viewed under angled light.

Cat Number: 2400101.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 131 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarcer as a very early pressing. Confirming the vintage of this copy, it includes its original polylined inner which includes date code of 0471 (seen in close-up). This was issued early that year. A Plum copy of this that also plays to perfection is a rare and wonderful experience. Often they crackle, especially if played on unworthy old equipment from the distant past. Only the most lightly played copies on worthy systems have any chance to track and reproduce the complex sounds this talanted progressive band are known for, and there lies the difference. Discerning, audiophile sound purists, please apply.

Brief Info: The band’s third album and the one that got them really noticed. A highly popular album within the progressive rock genre and it sold well. Hence finding Plum copies is far from impossible but conditions are always a major factor. Highly gifted musicians and complex music does not tolerate old worn stylus abuse and this includes some very quiet passages. A pre-Rick Wakeman album, the keys were taken by Tony Kaye, who subsequently left before the ‘Fragile’ classic. This record plays beautifully and is from the same collection as the superb ‘Fragile’ also on offer. For fans wanting an early copy with an unusually fine cover and a record that will remind of new, look no further.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++ and in terms of this highly intolerant cover, better still. Most are worn and tired looking, often badly rubbed and ringworn. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt finish and original 2400101 number. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and marketed by Polydor. Includes original inner.

Cover Front: A really superb looking front and few will even get close to it. Massively prone to rubbing and sticker damage, this has avoided any of that with any marks or blemishes tiny and ultra faint. With normal viewing, this is nearly as good as these get, the lack of creasing great news and practically all ink intact with no erosion or fading or tear marks. One to hold and admire, not hide away awaiting a better one.

Cover Back: The back is practically the same, a couple or three ultra fine surface creases, two on the spine edge that show little. The lack of ringwear is significant on this and few ever avoid it. Both front and back are supremely fresh and clean and show little traces of handling to the sensitive dark matt surfaces. Without any doubt, cover protected for many years.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both faces are in superb condition and have little to fault, one small mark near the top, just to right of hinge fold looks like a minor manufacture blemish to be.

Top Edges: Any rub traces are tiny and very faint.

Bottom Edges: Largely the same again, the faintest of friction rubs being critical.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with minimal traces of wear with no feathering, burring or trimming. Record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: The vulnerable spine is exceptional: solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square. Slight tilt from right to left but the right edges still meet up very closely together and still parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and any wear confined to just the end tip areas. Few of these will appear much better.

Corners: Any tip rubs are tiny and faint, the odd tip crease or minor burr being critical and all retain fine to very fine shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this very wear-prone early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner: EX and only marked down a little because of some, mainly mildish natural ageing with some light gum browning on the seams and darkened overall. In terms of real ‘wear’, this has little, what is highly important for the serious collector is the fact it’s early and includes the date code of 0471 (seen in close-up). Many still are unaware of the date codes some inners included and swap them around for similar ones, sometime with dates codes pre-dating the album’s issue, only to be caught-out by the more discerning collector. This inner has fully intact seams and an immaculate clear window, the lining in place but a loosened near the top opening edge, so care needed. But with a brand new inner included with this (and ALL records I sell), this inner need not be used for storage of the super record.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-), a fantastic visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy played but with the utmost care and both playing surfaces are practically pristine that will closely remind of new. This on a popular progressive giant of an album fast approaching forty. Visually a wonderful record that will please most-all collectors, yes, even the most discerning sound purists who cherish all the brilliance of quality pure sound. Album Played For Grading: Yes – and what a pleasure it was to do so. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This gorgeous record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is of audiophile standard with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A high fidelity recording from a band, even in the early days who cared about quality with complex music from way above average rock musicians. The incredible detail and clarity has to be heard. So cleanly pressed and devoid of surface sounds, pops or clicks, this can be enjoyed on the high-end systems I know some of my regulars own. Few copies will even match, let alone surpass this early pressing I feel sure. All the intricate sounds, vocals and instruments fully focused and sharp, this is a dream-piece of a copy that will never need upgrading. Just listen to the acoustic guitar solo ‘The Clap’, every chord change can be heard with precision and clarity. Truly a journey into the recording studio with mastertape audio quality. A reference standard original record, few could ask for more. All evidence points to a lightly played record, even with a few more spindle marks, clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing whatsoever spoilt my immense pleasure when play-grading this wonderful piece. The rare tingle factor was achieved several times on this one, only the cleanest, best recordings ever achieve this. This record will prove immesely difficult to find better and again, merits my highest possible recommendation – this, like ‘Fragile’, was a real delight.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
