ORIGINAL UK ATLANTIC (K 80001) FIRST PRESSING (December 1973) OF YES' VASTLY UNDERRATED PROG MASTERPIECE "Tales From Topographic Oceans" - AN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING PIECE OF WORK - AND THIS COPY IS IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION HAVING POSSIBLY NEVER BEEN PLAYED - IT DELIVERS SENSATIONAL CLEAN, SHARP AND POWERFUL SOUND THROUGHOUT ALL FOUR SIDES WITH NOTHING TO FAULT
PRESSED WITH THE FIRST ISSUE CUSTOM ROGER DEAN PICTURE LABELS (which are grooved and have no WB logo - which appears on these labels post 1975)
MATRICES: K 80001 A1 / K 80001 B1 / K 80001 C1 / K 80001 D3 (the lowest matrix set I have seen for this first pressing - its pretty rare to find the 1 suffix on any of the positions, never mind in three)
AND THE TWO RECORDS ARE HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL ROGER DEAN DESIGNED GATEFOLD SLEEVE WITH INTERNALLY PRINTED LYRICS "Printed and made in England by Shorewood Packaging"
COMPLETE WITH THE TWO ORIGINAL PLAIN WHITE DIE-CUT INNER SLEEVES WHICH HAVE THE UK PATENT NUMBER AND "MADE IN ENGLAND" TEXT PRINTED IN BLUE
The album's concept, a two-disc, four-piece work of symphonic length and scope (based on the Shastric scriptures, as found in a footnote within Paramahansa Yogananda's book Autobiography of a Yogi), was their most ambitious to date.
On release it received notably hostile reviews. Gordon Fletcher in his review in Rolling Stone described it as "psychedelic noodling". Chris Welch in Melody Maker described it as "Brilliant in patches, but often taking far too long to make its various points, and curiously lacking in warmth or personal expression".
Many Yes fans remain divided over whether or not this is one of the group's stronger works. Some Yes fans claim that it is far too excessive and obscure, while others see it as one of the band's masterpieces.

LABELS: The labels are clean and factory-fresh with no spindle wear or indeed any signs of use at all - MINT
VINYL Visual: Record One has a deep, like-new glossy sheen and is practically unmarked (some very light, wispy hairlines which have no audio consequence) - NEAR MINT. Record Two however has some pressing blemishes - but these are within the vinyl itself (not later wear, as the record has possibly never been played) and resemble the marbling effects seen on multi-coloured vinyl - these again have no audio consequence and are purely cosmetic so visually EXCELLENT for Record Two
VINYL Audio: A really tremendous piece of work with crystal clear, sharp, rich and very strong audio reproduction throughout all four Sides. On playback at a very loud volume (which is how I always listen to my LPs prior to listing - and it's always a great pleasure to return to this one) there are no audio issues of note - no scratches, no loud clicks or pops and no surface noise (the run-ins and quieter passages are silent). It plays beautifully and cleanly from start to finish with great clarity, no distortion and no groove-wear and is critically graded MINT(-) for audio - lovely copy, very hard to find playing this well
SLEEVE: This sleeve is always incredibly prone to wear and this one does display a little 'ring' on the front and back (nothing major) and a little edge and spine wear (again, nothing major) otherwise, a very fine example of this incredibly easily worn and rubbed sleeve - EXCELLENT
