I will never compromise on quality, safe packaging – I NEVER use mailing envelopes that offer virtually no protection at all, and records WILL arrive damaged in them at some time as most record buyers will already know. Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. Label/Format: Atlantic, original red and maroon (‘Plum’) format with matt, gently textured surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both generally clean and attractive with only very few light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. Gentle marks seen under light from the inner sleeve. A common trait more often seen on the record’s surface caused by the polymer reacting to the surface it contacts over many years of undisturbed storage. Glad to state the record’s playing areas are unaffected and this is a very impressive record that plays great. Viewed normally, full-on, the minor surface pattern marks barely even register. Under light, the labels only offer scant hint of age and still look impressive as-seen.

Warps or Lateral Movement: Assume all records I offer have no significant warping or lateral movement to cause sound or tracking issues. All should play fine even on budget turntables.

Rarity: Scarce as a first issue. With a hardly played record and very impressive cover – this massive prone to wear and damage – and original insert and inner – this is a quite a rare find.

Brief Info: The debut album by the British progressive rock band Yes. From the outset, it was clear they were a highly talented and different band. Of the eight tracks, six were original with two covers, one each by The Beatles and The Byrds. It was well received on issue but sales were only modest. It laid the foundation for what was to follow and is a gem in its own right. This a lovely UK original – the American version included a very different cover – the UK version being quite fragile and very prone to wear and seldom found this nice. The record appears hardly played and offers impressive clean sound, the original insert also included.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and this no mean grading for a cover usually found in very poor states. An unlaminated gatefold format, the front face being single thickness card, all surfaces are matt, the outer ones with a faint and gentle hint of texturing, the inside being smoother. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press, includes the lyric insert sheet and 1969 date-coded inner Philips style inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Matt, very dark single thickness card are sure-fire recipes for wear, creasing and damage. But against the odds this 50-year-old cover has little of any, and certainly no damage. Just a mild surface crease on the spine edge and a couple of ultra faint half moons that barely register. Any rubbing only light near the sides, and put in true context, very light, andn the lack of sticker issues another plus. Crisp, flat and neat, few will show much less wear or issues on this uncompromising front. The Yes graphic logo looks fantastic as-seen.

Cover Back: The back with virtually the same artwork is very close to matching the front with a mere shade more rubbing, but still very light for a back most often seen with ring wear and major rubbing. Few will be found better and note, this has the correct 588190 first catalogue number as it should.

Cover Inner Gatefold: These format style covers often have internal storage for the record, but not this one. Storage is on the usual right back edge. The inside is also impressive with the right band graphic superb and hardly worn at all. Unusually, the left text side lack the usual set off where dark ink rests upon light to leave residue – this is very rarely avoided – but this has hardly any traces at all. Any blemishes being light, few and faint as-seen. The thin spine fold still strong and undamaged, again quite unusual.

Top Edges: All straight, flat and flush, the back fold with hardly any wear, and the thin front showing minimal thickening.

Bottom Edges: Similar again with just a little light thickening on the back card end. For storage edges, these have fared unusually well.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Against all odds, the front thin card is still very sharp and unthickened. The back entrance edges are also impressive, the inner one very sharp, the outer one lightly thickened only, but few cover edges this age will naturally survive better.

Spine and Text: Also impressive with just a tiny central rub that has missed the text which is all present and strong. Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The surface barely worn bar the tiny aforementioned rub, every aspect of this cover is natural with NO enhancements or improvements. It was purchased by one owner from new.

Corners: Any tip rubs tiny and light, excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile and ruthlessly uncompromising 1960’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This challenging dark cover only gives scant clues of age and should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a polylined Philips style inner sleeve that is date-coded 30 /079 (July 1969) and has dual British Patent numbers: 800518 & 973737. Both window circles are neat with no damage and the polylining still clear and quite fresh. The white paper with minimal ageing or darkening, any edge toning minimal and faint. Hardly creased with only mild natural crinkle, all edges naturally intact.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): a lyric insert printed both sides and in impressive, little aged clean condition. Any hint of toning little and ultra light and faint, the thick paper uncreased with no tears or writing. This guaranteed original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces very light, mostly wispy and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. I emphasise again, the playing surfaces have NO inner sleeve rash (patterned dulling) from years of storage which is a common trait for record stored in polylined inners. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality debut album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this very early first pressing (confirmed by the matrixes seen above) I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this lovely record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
