London band The Yardbirds hit a decisive turning point with this 1966 studio set, recorded as the group edged away from their blues-club roots towards something definitive and more exploratory. Sitting mid-career, it's the only album they made entirely from original material, and it's also the moment Jeff Beck's guitar fully reshapes their sound. 'Over Under Sideways Down' and 'The Nazz Are Blue' crackle with distorted blues energy and skewed rhythms, while 'Hot House of Omagararshid' and 'He's Always There' dive into studio experimentation, tape effects and droning textures. Keith Relf's cool, haunted delivery anchors the chaos, with Jim McCarty's drumming keeping everything taut. Issued here as a lavish anniversary box, it captures a band restlessly inventing rock's future in real time.
