Cover: ex- (box fully intact save for a 1" split on the top; few light stains on the front) Great and mega-rare box set with experimental piano works performed by Aki Takahashi. 1 disc is devoted entirely to classic 20th century European and American avant garde piano compositions, ranging from serialism to indeterminacy to free-form graphical scores, and the other 2 feature a variety of postwar Japanese experimental composers' takes on the genre. These pieces incorporate experimental techniques such as electronics, percussion devices, inside-the-piano playing, vocal utterances by the pianist, and other unusual sounds. Fluxus composer Ichiyanagi's composition is an interesting response to computer music that instructs the player to play various patterns in a mechanical manner. Yuji Takahashi's work has the piano electronically processed through "a Fuzz-Wow circuit". The incredible Saegusa work has the player performing simultaneously on piano, electric piano, prepared piano, and combo-organ, along with an electronic tape part. The Xenakis piece is mathematically-derived "symbolic (logico-ensemblist) music". Overall, this is definitely one of the best collections of contemporary Japanese composers as well as avant garde piano music in general. With lengthy insert notes by Paul Zukofsky (on whose label this set was issued).

Takahashi is a Japanese pianist and composer who studied under Xenakis, collaborated with John Zorn, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Musica Elettronica Viva, Ned Rothenberg, and Carl Stone, and also worked with Toshi Ichiyanagi, Kenji Kobayashi, John Cage, Earle Brown, Roger Reynolds, and Toru Takemitsu. Takemitsu was trained as a guitarist, earned praise and encouragement from Stravinsky early in his career, and became influenced by John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, Webern, Messiaen, and Debussy; his compositions combined traditional Japanese music with avant garde western techniques such as electronic music, indeterminacy, graphic notation, and serialism. Stockhausen was a student of Olivier Messiaen and a contemporary of John Cage and Iannis Xenakis; he pioneered musique concrete at the INA-GRM, WDR Koln, and NHK Tokyo early electronic music studios, explored improvisation and live electronics with David Tudor, Vinko Globokar, and Michel Portal, and has worked with Pierre Boulez, Pierre Schaeffer, Luciano Berio, Karel Goeyvaerts, Mauricio Kagel, Franco Evangelisti, Herbert Eimert, Bruno Maderna, and Henri Pousseur. Cage, arguably the most influential American composer of the 20th century, was known for his innovative use of chance methods, silence, found sounds, and extended playing and electroacoustic treatment techniques on traditional instruments; he studied under Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg, led the New York School of early postwar experimental composers (Earle Brown, Christian Wolff, Morton Feldman), was a contemporary of Karlheinz Stockhausen and Iannis Xenakis, collaborated with Conlon Nancarrow, David Tudor, and Merce Cunnigham, and was associated with the Fluxus 'post-dada' art movement (Yoko Ono, Nam June Paik, George Maciunas, La Monte Young, Milan Knizak, etc.). Bussotti was a pupil of Max Deutsch and Luigi Dallapiccola, experimented with graphic notation, worked with David Tudor and Cathy Berberian, and was influenced by John Cage and Pierre Boulez while studying at the Darmstadt courses; he was a composer, painter, theatre and television actor and director, violinist, and pianist. Known as the father of the French avant garde, Messiaen worked with Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry and was an essential teacher of Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, Francois Bayle, and Francois Bernard Mache (among many other 20th century luminaries); he was influenced by Claude Debussy, Igor Stravinsky, Hindu music, Gamelan, and nature (birdsong), and his composing style was driven in part by his synesthesia (a brain condition that caused him to visually perceive sounds). Berio was a collaborator with Italo Calvino, an associate of Karlheinz Stockhausen, a pupil of Luigi Dallapiccola and Olivier Messiaen, teacher of Steve Reich, and director of the electro-acoustic department of IRCAM in Paris where he worked with Pierre Boulez. Ishii studied under Akira Ifukube, Tomojiro Ikenouchi, Akeo Watanabe, Boris Blacher, and Josef Rufer and was influenced by the serialism of Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, and Boulez; his work is associated with that of Takemitsu and Mayuzumi. Boulez is an influential French postwar composer, conductor, writer, and lecturer who worked with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, Pierre Schaeffer, Iannis Xenakis, and Gyorgi Ligeti, and was a student of Arnold Schoenberg and Olivier Messiaen. Ichyanagi is a Japanese experimental composer who was influenced by John Cage, worked with Michael Ranta and Takehisa Kosugi, was the first husband of Yoko Ono, and was a member of the Fluxus "post-dada" art movement.
