ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONON GRADING SYSTEM USED(Please read!)

GRADING SYSTEM (modified Goldmine-the only difference isformalizing theExcellent (EX)/VG++grade).

MINT (M)

These are absolutelyperfect in every way. Oftenrumored but rarely seen, Mint should never be usedas a grade unless more thanone person agrees that the record or sleeve truly isin this condition. Thereis no set percentage of the Near Mint value these canbring; it is bestnegotiated between buyer and seller.

NEAR MINT (NM OR M-)

A good description of aNM record is “it lookslike it just came from a retail store and it was openedfor the first time.” Inother words, it’s nearly perfect. Many dealers won’t usea grade higher thanthis, implying (perhaps correctly) that no record or sleeveis ever trulyperfect.

NM records are shiny, with no visible defects.Writing, stickers or other markings cannot appear onthe label, nor can any“spindle marks” from someone trying to blindly put therecord on the turntable.Major factory defects also must be absent; a record andlabel obviously pressedoff center is not Near Mint. If played, it will do sowith no surface noise.(NM records don’t have to be “never played”; a recordused on an excellentturntable can remain NM after many plays if the disc isproperly cared for.)

NM covers are free ofcreases, ring wear andseam splits of any kind.

NOTE: These are highstandards, and they are noton a sliding scale. A record or sleeve from the1950s must meet the samestandards as one from the 1990s or 2000s to be NearMint! It’s estimated thatno more than 2 to 4 percent of all records remainingfrom the 1950s and 1960sare truly Near Mint. This is why they fetch such highprices, even for morecommon items.

Don’t assume yourrecords are Near Mint. Theymust meet these standards to qualify!

Excellent (EX or VG++)

A halfway point betweena NM record and a VG+record.

A Record may have veryslight scuffs, but only afew small ones. Cover may have a few smallimperfections, but NO splits orwriting.

(IMO, the ONLY flaw withthe goldmine system isnot having this mid grade as an option. It DOES mentionthis grade, but forsome inexplicable reason it doesn't give it its own grade(see next grade).

VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+)

A good description of aVG+ record is “exceptfor a couple minor things, this would be Near Mint.” Mostcollectors, especially those who want to play their records, will be happy witha VG+record, especially if it toward the high end of the grade (sometimescalledVG++ or E+).

VG+ records may showsome slight signs of wear, including light scuffs or very light scratches thatdo not affect the listeningexperience. Slight warps that do not affect thesound are OK. Minor signs ofhandling are OK, too, such as telltale marks aroundthe center hole, butrepeated playing has not misshapen the hole. There may besome very light ringwear or discoloration, but it should be barely noticeable.

VG+ covers should haveonly minor wear. A VG+cover might have some very minor seam wear or a split(less than one inch long)at the bottom, the most vulnerable location. Also, aVG+ cover may have somedefacing, such as a cut-out marking. Covers with cut-outmarkings can never beconsidered Near Mint.

Very Good (VG)

Many of theimperfections found on a VG+ recordare more obvious on a VG record. That said,VG records — which usually sell forno more than 25 percent of a NM record — areamong the biggest bargains inrecord collecting, because most of the “big money”goes for more perfectcopies. For many listeners, a VG record or sleeve will beworth the money.

VG records have moreobvious flaws than theircounterparts in better shape. They lack most of theoriginal gloss found onfactory-fresh records. Groove wear is evident on sight,as are light scratchesdeep enough to feel with a fingernail. When played, a VGrecord has surfacenoise, and some scratches may be audible, especially in softpassages andduring a song’s intro and ending. But the noise will not overpowerthe musicotherwise.

Minor writing, tape or asticker can detractfrom the label. Many collectors who have jukeboxes will useVG records in themand not think twice. They remain a fine listening experience, just not the sameas if it were in better shape.

VG covers will have manysigns of humanhandling. Ring wear in the middle or along the edges of the coverwhere theedge of a record would reside, is obvious, though not overwhelming. Some morecreases might be visible. Seam splitting will be more obvious; it mayappear onall three sides, though it won’t be obvious upon looking. Someonemight havewritten or it or stamped a price tag on it, too.

Good (G),

Good Plus (G+)

or Very Good Minus (VG–)

These records go for 10to 15 percent of theNear Mint value, if you are lucky.

Good does not mean bad!The record still playsthrough without skipping, so it can serve as filler untilsomething bettercomes along. But it has significant surface noise and groovewear, and thelabel is worn, with significant ring wear, heavy writing, or obviousdamagecaused by someone trying to remove tape or stickers and failingmiserably. AGood to VG– cover has ring wear to the point of distraction, hasseam splitsobvious on sight and may have even heavier writing, such as, forexample, hugeradio station letters written across the front to deter theft.

If the item is common,it’s probably better topass it up. But if you’ve been seeking it for a longtime, get it cheap andlook to upgrade.

POOR (P)

and Fair (F)

Poor (P) and Fair (F)records go for 0 to 5percent of the Near Mint value, if they go at all. Morelikely, they end upgoing in the trash.

Records are cracked, impossibly warped, or skipand/or repeat when an attempt is made to play them.Covers are so heavilydamaged that you almost want to cry.

Only the mostoutrageously rare items ever sellfor more than a few cents in this condition —again, if they sell at all.
