Up for auction here is a rare, original, first pressing (with 'FRANCIS' inscribed in the run out groove) of The Ideal Beginning 7" EP on the Enigma label, by Warsaw, Joy Division's earlier incarnation. Bought by me at the time of its release in May, 1981.

With an acknowledgement to the wonderful Joy Division Central website and, in turn, their reference to Neil Woodvine's early 90s Joy Division publication, the latter clarifies the details of this 'semi official' EP.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Released in excellent quality stereo, at first whether this was a bootleg or an officially sanctioned release was unclear. A little detective work revealed the source to be Manchester's Chaos Cassettes who claimed that it was not so much a bootleg as 'An underground collectors edition'. John West, the man responsible for Chaos releases said "We only had 2000 pressed so that it would remain collectible. It was done with the approval of the group's management. They did it just the same as they did the Sordide Sentimental deal. Enclosed in a sleeve designed after An Ideal For Living the EPs were issued on May 18th 1981, exactly one year after Ian's death. A bootleg in all but name, royalties of a fashion were paid to the band."

Of interest to any fan of punk/post punk/new wave/Joy Division/Ian Curtis/New Order/Factory Records/Hacienda etc.
