Description

ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful and exceedingly rare LP from Philips (412 321-1, West German pressing, silver/red label, DDD stereo) features Christopher Warren-Green’s dazzling account of Vivaldi’s 'The Four Seasons' Op. 8 Nos. 1-4, from 'The Trial of Harmony and Invention', recorded with conductor Thomas Wilbrandt and the Philharmonia Orchestra, a promotional stereo pressing first issued in 1984. Incidentally, among the other instrumentalists heard in this remarkable recording are the cellist Andrew Schulman and the organist/harpsichordist John Constable.

This recording was made at EMI Studio No. 1, Abbey Road, London on 6, 7, and 12 July 1983 (producer: Thomas Wilbrandt and Simon Jeffes / engineer: John Kurlander).

This LP is no less rare than Accardo’s celebrated digital account with I Solisti delle Settimane Internazionali di Napoli (also on Philips), and the fiddling is no less distinctive or brilliant. Indeed, it would be difficult to imagine Vivaldi's Four Seasons being played with greater assurance than here; Warren-Green with stunning verve and conviction.

Incidentally, there are excellent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Uwe Kraemer, printed in both German and English.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is a slight bit of bumping and creasing to the top edge, as well as very minor wear at corners, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a fine collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really this is a very fine copy and playback is truly superb. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a very fine collector's copy.
