Here’s a pair of single-sided acetates containing demos that Warren Zevon recorded as a young songwriter in the mid-60s. Both of these songs, “Why You’re Going” and “The Time It Takes to Heal a Heart” appear here on a 1968 copyright document identifying Warren as composer, along with “Outside Chance,” the song he wrote for the Turtles--but they were probably recorded a couple of years earlier, possibly as early as '66. It's hard to say who's singing lead. The vocal on "Why You're Going" sounds like it could be a youthful Warren, while the other might be sung by Glenn Crocker, who was his songwriting partner at the time. Unfortunately, there’s not much to go on beside the copyright. Neither song was ever recorded by another artist, or released by Zevon himself. I came into these discs with a collection of other studio acetates and LA music industry ephemera from the same era. Both are in excellent condition and play beautifully.
