Wagner: Tannhauser
(And The State Song Contest At The Wartburg)

Franz Konwitschny/ Chorus & Orchestra of German State Opera, Berlin
Fischer-Dieskau, Frick, Hopf, Grummer etc..

(HMV ASD 445-448 (SLS 764) UK 4 x LP Box Set 1961)

This is an original UK Stereo 4 LP Box Set pressing in very nice overall condition! It has a heavyweight outer box which is hinged at the spine. The box is made of hard textured red card. It has a laminated front picture cover. This has a gold circular "EMI Stereophonic" sticker on the front. It has embossed gold lettering on the spine. The inside of the box is plain white card. It has a generic company information sticker on the left hand side.

It comes with its original Libretto. These, in some cases, were not originally issued with the box set and had to be bought separately. Either from a specialist record shop, or mail order, at the time. Therefore, they are often missing in these early UK Box Sets. It also includes its original Information Insert. This is printed on paper.

All 4 LP's come with their original polythene-lined generic "EMI" company inner sleeve. All 4 LP's are pressed on thick vinyl & have white & gold "HMV" labels. Interestingly, there is a "Factory Sample" sticker on one label on each LP.

The matrix numbers are as follows:

LP 1: (Side 1 & 2)
Side 1: 2YRA 1695-1
Side 2: 2YRA 1696-1

LP 2: (Side 3 & 4)
Side 1: 2YRA 1697-1
Side 2: 2YRA 1698-1

LP 3: (Side 5 & 6)
Side 1: 2YRA 1699-1
Side 2: 2YRA 1700-1

LP 4: (Side 7 & 8)
Side 1: 2YRA 1701-2
Side 2: 2YRA 1702-1

This is a genuine UK 1st pressing of this rare UK Stereo Classical/ Opera 4 LP Box Set. It has the earliest matrix numbers & comes complete with libretto & insert. Hard to find like this. In very nice overall condition too. I have some other rare UK Classical LP's for sale. So please see my other listings. Don't miss out!

Box: There is some light, very mild or very minor rubbing wear on some corner tip areas. This is mainly on the front part of the box only. The inside of the box is in great condition. There is some minor writing in pencil on the sticker. This could be easily removed if desired. There is some minor fading to the gold lettering on the spine on some areas. The text is completely legible. The spine, overall, is in great condition. The back of the box is in great condition too. The hinge is in great shape. It is in perfect working order. Overall, NEAR EXCELLENT condition.

Vinyl 1: Firstly, there is a light or very minor warp. It hardly really notices and does not affect playback at all. It only really notices at all when playing Side 2. Otherwise, there are some light or very minor sleeve rubs which can barely be seen under a strong light. The inner sleeve, over time, has left some light, very mild or very minor dull surface marks on a few areas. These, again, can hardly be seen under a strong light. NEAR EXCELLENT condition. The labels are in Mint condition and show no spindle wear. The company inner sleeve is in Very Good++ condition. There is some light, mild or very mild ringwear, fading & creasing. There are no seam splits.

I have play tested this LP in its entirety & it plays Near Excellent to Excellent overall, & Excellent+ in some places. There is some light, mild or very mild crackle in some places.

Vinyl 2: Firstly, there is a light or very minor warp. It hardly really notices and does not affect playback at all. It only really notices at all when playing Side 4. The company inner sleeve is in Very Good+ condition. There is some light, mild or more moderate ringwear, fading & creasing. There are no seam splits.

I have play tested this LP in its entirety & it plays Near Excellent to Excellent overall, & Excellent+ in some places. There is some light, mild or very mild crackle in some places.

Vinyl 4: There is no warp. I have play tested this LP in its entirety & it plays Near Excellent to Excellent overall, & Excellent+ in some places. There is some light, mild or very mild crackle in some places.

The Libretto is in Near Excellent condition. It is totally complete with no loose pages. the staples have not rusted.  It shows light, very mild or very minor handling creases on some pages. The Information Insert is in Excellent+ condition. It shows minimal wear only.

All 4 LP's would benefit from a deep down groove clean in a professional record cleaning machine. Visually the discs look in superb condition. They still gleam like new! Therefore, any crackle is just due to deep down dirt in the grooves. They would, I believe, be a top audio copy after a professional clean. It would remove any crackle.

Traceable insurance is already included in the stated P&P price for this listing.

We offer worldwide postage. Discount is given on P&P for multiple purchases. I shall always weigh combined purchases to get a completely accurate price.  So please wait for the invoice to be sent before paying. Please see below for a more detailed description.

    >>  Grading Information All grading is very strict & adheres to 'Record Collector' specifications. However, I have fine tuned them & they are explained below. All vinyl is examined closely under a strong light & play tested.

MINT Condition = As good as a copy you would buy from a shop, immaculate!

NEAR MINT Condition = Very nearly mint just slightly under, maybe a couple of very, very light paper sleeve scuffs that can only be seen under strong light. SOME WOULD CLASS THIS AS MINT. This disc has been played a couple of times at most. Cover is virtually perfect - very minimal wear only.

EX Condition = A clean & tidy copy that shows virtually no defects. Maybe one or two light needle scuffs or light sleeve removal marks that can only be seen under strong light. There will be no scratches. Play will be near perfect with no distortion. Cover will be very nice with maybe very minimal creasing, ringwear or edgewear.

NEAR EX Condition = You can tell this record has been played a few times but it has been well cared for. There will be minor surface marks only; that barely detract from the sound quality. Cover may have slight creasing or ringwear. A very serviceable copy that you will be pleased with.

VG Condition = A well played but serviceable copy. There will be a few marks on the vinyl, but they won't be nasty scratches, just relatively light needle scuffs and sleeve removal marks, they will be noticeable but won't detract from play too much. Cover will show signs of storage/ ageing, e.g., creasing, slight folding, spinewear, ringwear or sticker tears. The record will not be trashed!!
>>  Postage Rates

AN INVOICE WILL BE SENT TO YOU VERY SOON AFTER THE AUCTION ENDS. PLEASE WAIT FOR THIS BEFORE PAYING.

Royal Mail have very recently increased their postage rates. So I have revised my postage costs to reflect their increases. (Please note that these prices include packaging costs too)

DISCOUNT WILL BE GIVEN ON POSTAGE FOR MULTIPLE ITEMS. SEE PRICES ABOVE.

All records will be sent in high quality vinyl mailers with at least two card stiffeners either side of the LP or 7". I use a cruciform box for larger orders (4-6 LPs). All parcels will be marked "Fragile" and dispatch time will generally be between 2-3 days after payment.

I will also remove the vinyl from the sleeve & place them in a re-sealable polythene sleeve. In order to prevent seam splits. Depending on the inner sleeve; I often remove the vinyl from the inner sleeve & place it in a separate plain paper, or polythene-lined, plain inner sleeve. I am very conscientious and careful when packaging your LP(s).

I consider my postage & packaging costs to be very transparent & very fair. Packaging costs will generally be between £0.80 to £2.00. I am not adding any further costs for handling, etc...

If you are uncertain about any of the above, or just simply want some information regarding any item, please do not hesitate to contact me. I welcome any questions.

Remember to check out My Other Items Lots of rare & quality vinyl! Most are UK 1st Pressings. It is quite likely that there will be more records by this artist, or records in a similar vein.
