A key session player and bandmember with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, J.J. Johnson, and Wes Montgomery, to single out just a handful, pianist Wynton Kelly also led several sessions of his own during his short life. This 1961 Vee-Jay release is a fine example of Kelly relaxed and swinging. Working a similar niche to some of the piano trio work of Red Garland and Ahmad Jamal -- two pianists with their own associations with Miles Davis -- Kelly takes a selection of well-known standards and energizes them with tasteful, sophisticated, snappy performances, blending in a group of original tunes along the way. "Surrey With the Fringe on Top," "Gone With the Wind," and "Autumn Leaves" are all given fresh, up-tempo treatments. The ballads "Love I've Found You" and Kelly's own "Make the Man Love Me" showcase thoughtful interplay among the trio members. Sam Jones and Paul Chambers share bass duties on the set. Jimmy Cobb is the drummer. While Jones' trademark, sonorous whump comes through nicely in the mix, overall, the performances of the sidemen are more self-effacing than is typical for them. But, then again, this date is about putting a much-deserved spotlight on the pianist's talents. It's a short turn in the limelight, though. The album clocks in at a brief 34:27.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions (probably just sleeve scuffs inflicted in storage over the years) ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly  insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)            The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(d)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  (nothing significant)
