DESCRIPTION FROM CRUCIAL BLAST:
Just found out about this new album from the new band Wormskull mere moments before its release , and was immediately dying to hear it. Featuring prolific breakcore extremist Bong-Ra (aka Jason Kohnen, also of Servants Of The Apocalyptic Goat Rave, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation, and White Darkness) with Deformer (aka Mike Redman), Balazs Pandi and Eni-Less, Wormskull continues in the vein of Bong-Ra's previous mashups of death metal, grindcore, industrial and breakcore/jungle, but this band twists that weird fusion of sounds into a brutal, ragga/hip-hip infected monstrosity that's a bit different than Kohnen's previous stuff. This utterly dystiopian new sound feels like what street kids in Britain would be listening to if their city was plagued by demons; it's hard, gritty, ugly beat-heavy music that seeps with insanity and apocalyptic disaffection. The album is covered with images of demonic skulls, devil-worms, ghetto culture, but the sounds inside are pretty fucked up. The songs on Sound Of Hell are car wrecks of spastic, murderous breakcore, Godflesh-esque industrial death metal, the raving gibberish of a Rastafarian madman, and loads of grindhouse brain-damage crammed into eleven tracks of crushing electronic violence. Longtime listeners of the radio show Coast To Coast will recognize the intro that pens the album, that infamous recording of what was purportedly the "gates of Hell" recorded in a Siberian mine in the 90s that aired on the show. And then it's on to the brutal pummel of metallic double bass drumming that leads into the warped chaotic breakcore of "Wormskull", Swedish-style death metal guitars (played, not sampled) layered over chopped up cymbal-splattered breaks, an epic riff underneath the surging, spastic rhythm that veers into sudden blastbeat fury and more double-kick thunder. On this track and throughout the album, the music is laced with all kinds of additional Satanic schlock and horror movie samples, as well as some genuinely creepy soundbites and loops that are woven around the crazed PCP-fueled dancehall toasting, all welded to fast-paced rhythms that are lifted right out of extreme metal. The song "Deadlocks" is another one of these bruising hybrids of death metal crunch, extreme distorted breakcore, and maniacal dancehall violence (courtesy of guest vocalist Scapu Lox). "Nosebleed" is crushing doom-laden dubstep filth that throws out some over the top pitchshifted rhyming, and "Woody Strode" pay homage to the titular character actor through a slithering, wobbly, distorted dubstep nightmare with eerie feedback that mimics the sorrowful wail of harmonica, evoking the moody Westerns that Strode starred in back in the 60s and 70s. Scapu Lox returns with more deranged apocalyptic toasting over "Ori Ede"'s blitzkrieg rastafarian breakcore, and "Stereokillah" sends a massive blown-out bass tone drilling through a creepazoid piano loop playing over an industrialized metallic dirge. "Downer" almost sounds like Ministry, and closer "Corpsefucker" weds blackened guitars and blasphemous ranting to spastic electronic rhythms.
Regular metal fans will mostly likely turn up their nose at Wormskull's death metal influenced breakcore, but Bong-Ra and Deformer fans will fucking loven this album. It's not drum n' bass - there's way too much metal infesting this stuff - but it's right there on the extreme edge of breakcore/raggacore.
The vinyl version of the album also includes a CD version of Sound Of Hell. © CRUCIAL BLAST
