stereo US original white label promotional copy of this
classic by David Crosby of The Byrds and CSN&Y with its original
textured gatefold cover and is pressed onto thick heavy vinyl and
has Artisan mastering stamps and this lp is a TAS Superdisc Audiophile
recording, meaning the sound quality is exceptional on this release
and this album features the entirety of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
most of the Grateful Dead practically all of Jefferson Airplane
one third of Santana plus Joni Mitchell and more

promotional copies of vinyl record releases are almost often
true first pressings and were also often the highest quality pressing
made as they were held to higher standards because they were sent out
to reviewers as well as disc jockeys and television stations and the
record label would want to make a good impression and were
often made directly from new clean master disks

record is in very good condition and has
been fully play tested and it sounds great and plays
with mellow crackle throughout but no skips or repeats
or other bad noise and the vinyl is shiny & clean
with minimal wear and has clean bright labels

cover is in excellent condition with bold bright
printing and has no seam splits, writing or markings
but does have a little bit of edge & corner wear

the above is 'scrawled' into the dead wax and has
Artisan mastering stampers in the runout groove on each
side (these look kind of like a snare drum with a pair of drum
sticks placed atop) and Artisan was a L.A. mastering house that did
a lot of excellent work particularly in the early '70s and was where
Kevin Gray first learned how to master LPs and finding an album with
the Artisan stamp in the dead wax is almost always a guarantee
of good sound, assuming the vinyl's in good shape


~ review ~


David Crosby's debut solo album, If I Could Only Remember My Name
is a one-shot wonder of dreamy but ominous California ambiance. The songs
range from brief snapshots of inspiration (the angelic chorale-vocal showcase
on "Orleans" and the a cappella closer, "I'd Swear There Was Somebody Here") to
the full-blown, rambling western epic "Cowboy Movie" and there are absolutely
no false notes struck or missteps taken. No one before or since has gotten as much
mileage out of a wordless vocal as Crosby does on "Tamalpais High (At About 3)"
and "Song With No Words (Tree With No Leaves)" and because the music is so
relaxed, each song turns into its own trippy cosmic panoramic vista including the
gorgeous "Laughing" or the social questioning of "What Are Their Names" and while
this album is full of trippy long pieces, it is an incredibly focused album. Even when
a song as pretty as "Traction in the Rain" shimmers with its picked guitars and autoharp
is coated in a distinct, persistent menace that is impossible to shake. Crosby wouldn't
match the genius of this album as he continued to stumble into aimless drug addiction
in the decades to follow this. If I Could Only Remember My Name is a shambolic
minor key masterpiece, meandering but transcendentally so, full of frayed threads and
not only is it among the finest splinter albums out of the CSNY diaspora it is one
of the defining moments of hungover spirituality from the era. Those who liked
David Crosby's moody, brooding, delicate "Everybody's been burned" from
the Byrds 1967 "Younger than yesterday" album will love this
