Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces tiny, very few and faint. This superb record appears hardly played reinforced by fantastic clean sound.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 120 grams. About average for it’s era.

Rarity: Moderate: but hardly played complete copies with all the parts in very fine to almost pristine condition are far, far harder. This proved to be a popular album and sold well, but over time, the record tended to get heavily played and pieces of the set go missing or damaged. The cover in particular is never easy to find without significant wear.

Brief Info: The fourth and follow-up album to the very successful ‘Band on the Run’. It also sold well and included lavish packaging and supreme sound production. Most McCartney fans will know all about this album already, I will concentrate on describing what is included and it’s condition.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Made thick and robust and the front has the promotional sticker. Printed and made in England. Includes two stickers and two posters and graphic inner sleeve.

Cover Front: The front is clean, fresh and barely worn or creased at all, practically nothing to really fault at all. The round sticker near the top right corner area is also clean and has never been removed or picked at. A hint of fading around the circumference, but little else.

Cover Back: Similar again, and so few of these escape ring wear which this has. Any rub traces are very gentle and faint indeed and again, crease-free.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little short of as made.

Top Edges: Very thick, mainly straight with any rubbing very light and gentle.

Bottom Edges: Largely as above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both very clean, sharp with little wear, any thickening or burring minuscule. The contents enter on these edges that are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid and very thick, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn with any rub traces to the surface tiny and light near the bottom. Even the vulnerable folds retain nigh-on fully ink coverage.

Corners: Small tip rubs or less with excellent shape retained with no dinks or creasing worthy of special note.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this well-known wear-prone 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): just a small faint rub at the bottom of each side from the rim. That apart, practically as made again with no creasing or any note and minimal handling traces on the revealing matt dark surfaces. No edge splits or repairs and the shaped corners and recessed top opening crisp and immaculate. This unlined card inner will seldom be found much better.

The Posters: Both practically MINT: unmounted, clean and fresh with no creasing. Very impressive indeed and I would doubt if they have seen light-of-day for decades.

The Stickers: Both MINT(-): both have the ‘Crack Back’ backing fully intact and almost crease-free - a tiny faint trace on the circular one near the word ‘AND’, but look hard. These two more delicate items are seldom seen like this as they tended to catch inside the cover’s gatefold and got bent when closed. That especially so for the long one. Both probably the best I have seen for years and simply remind of new.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and solidly pressed. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks minuscule, even as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very impressive record plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Beautifully produced by McCartney with sound most discerning collectors will cherish. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks of any note were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
