WILDFIRE 'Smokin' (Germany, Shadoks, Catalogue #085) Brand new/unplayed copy (NOTE: STILL SEALED!) of limited and LONG OUT OF PRINT Shadoks label LP edition (edition of 450 numbered copies) of rare heavy psych rock LP (originally released in 1970) by Southern California by way of Austin, Texas band Wildfire. Numbered edition of 450, heavy gatefold sleeve, 180 gram vinyl.

'California trio Wildfire came to Austin in 1969. They shared the stage with many performers such as Johnny Winter, Allman Brothers, Freddy King, Shivas Headband and many more. After laying down initial tracks at the Beach Boys recording studios (Wildfire guitarist Randy Love is Beach Boy Mike Love's cousin) the trio ended up at SONOBEAT studios to record the 8-track album. SONOBEAT became famous for the recording Johnny Winter album, Cold Sun and Mariani. This album is extra heavy psychedelic rock with dual vocals, great stereo effects, all original songs in Moby Grape/Blue Cheer direction. They used to be one of the loudest band's around with their custom built Quilter amps. For the fist time officially released direct from copies of the master tapes.'

'Not discovered until the 1990s, this is a very good hardrock-guitarpsych LP in the classic local early 1970's style. Wasted teenage vocals, dual guitar leads and excellent bass create a sound that sounds almost custom-made for private press collectors. Comparisons have been made drawn to early Grand Funk, and while Wildfire (like so many other local hardrock bands) probably drew some inspiration there, their ambitions extend beyond groove and power, in a way the reminds me of Texas bands like Josefus and (especially) Seompi. This may not be a coincidence, since the band was very popular around Austin, and split their time between TX and South CA, which are also the two areas where the LP was distributed (only a few copies of the 1000 pressed have turned up). The in yer face hardrock of the opening "Stars In The Sky" is given a surprising lyrical westcoast turn on the dynamite "Time Will Tell", while the closing "Quicksand" goes into freaky, near-fusion jamming. Although a little short on songwriting hooks, the album plays strongly throughout, with a wise lack of dull blooz or misguided jokey tunes. The vocalist is straining a bit to keep up with the dynamite in-yer-face band, but this is no major problem. Wildfire's powerful sound is partly due to the custom-built speakers the band utilized, further boosted by recording with the great Bill Josey and Sonobeat in Austin, the same studio the cut Cold Sun and Mariani. One member of the band backed Phil Pearlman on his 1964 pre-Beat Of The Earth surf-spoof 45. The band-released CD and Shadoks reissue are remastered from tapes and sound better than the vinyl-sourced OR reissue.' - Patrick Lundborg/Acid Archives.
