Label Conditions: All four are superb: very clean, fresh and attractive with just one or two fine, light and faint spindle marks. Both records are in stunning visual condition and for sure, have hardly been played. I have not doubts the few who bought this album back in 1969 did so either as a pure curiousity purchase or the fact it was linked to Zappa and The Mothers of Invention. The content even for hardened Zappa fans could have proved a little too ‘out-there’ for some.

Rarity: This has always been very scarce, with only low sales. The UK version is, in my experience, much harder to find than the US version on Bizarre but neither are easy. A high percentage of buyers of this album would have been Zappa fans who were probably just curious at the time. This bizarre album had no commercial potential whatsoever and remains one of the most ‘Out There’ albums ever issued. Also it has never been available legally on CD and quite honestly, unlikely ever to be.

Brief Artist & Album Info: I have listed this under ‘Rock – Classic’, well being honest, I did not really know what to list it under as there is no ‘Bizarre’, ‘Way-Out’ or ‘Out-There’ categories to choose from. Issued in the same year as Captain Beefheart’s masterwork, ‘Trout Mask Replica’, also produced by Zappa, these provide two of rock’s most ‘alternative’, ‘out-there’ albums released. Fischer remained friends with Frank until a jar was thrown at Zappa’s young daughter narrowly missing her. He was an outsider, and without any doubt this is the most strange, unique and even ‘scary’ albums ever - all for real, not acted. Larry ‘Wild Man’ Fischer was a busker in New York, he ‘sang’ original songs to his audience for a dime. He was a novelty, almost cult figure as a street performer in New York in the 1960s. After a meeting, Frank Zappa decided to make a record featuring Larry singing some of his own ‘songs’ and tell his story. A character right on the very edge, this double album is almost autobiographical, it’s a little disturbing, at times harrowing, but at times funny and even child-like. Zappa produces, and his influence is experienced throughout. He can be heard directing on several passages. Backing, where present, is performed by Art Tripp III on percussion, the highlight of this album is the track ‘Circle’ which is fully backed by Zappa and The Mothers of Invention with ‘their big amplifiers’. ‘An Evening With…’ includes performances of Larry busking for his dimes and talking to his audience who think he is insane. Also dialogue about his mental state, childhood and growing up, some original songs and his influences and loves. This album has always divided opinion: some thought it in bad taste due to Larry’s mind state when recording, this is not an easy album to take in and many will find it at times, difficult. For me it’s essential in any serious Zappa collection - he really encaptures Larry’s ambitions to be a singer and allows him total freedom to get his story over to the listener prepared to listen. I found the whole experience quite compelling and it has moments of real humour, but some is dark and quite disturbing. When Larry’s voice changes from his own to his mother’s, Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’ springs to mind. Most fans of the 1960s underground scene will know the opener ‘Merry-go-Round’, it was his most requested ‘song’ on the streets of NY, it has references on Zappa’s ‘Lumpy Gravy’ album. The final track is very unsettling as he remembers his bad times and clearly the man is on the very edge. Larry tries to play guitar and sing Stones, Beatles and Cream songs - Zappa is always there to keep control when things get a little frantic and helps him get through. Sometimes he would perform on stage with the Mothers, (see the back cover artwork), sometimes there was trouble, his performances were, like this album, unpredictable. If you dare to try something ‘different’, give this album a try, I promise you have not heard anything quite like it, it remains a real one-off and nothing else sounds anything like it – and I doubt if anything will ever again. His later works were more measured and controlled, nothing is held back on this double set. This one hardly played and a much rarer UK original – probably only pressed once and then deleted – as already stated, this had just about zero commercial potential. The cover has probably the least real wear I have yet seen, that’s including my own personal copy, but does have a sticker mark on the front (top right), it will still taking some beating. It’s rare, it’s here, and a strong contender for the most bizarre and way-out albums ever issued, he became known as the ‘godfather of outsider music’. Are you rollin’?, ARE YOU ROLLIN’?!!

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High++: Rarely found devoid of heavy rubbing, grubbiness, and especially ring wear.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT and certainly one of the better ones I have seen. I have only marked down for the sticker mark as already mentioned. A cover as controversial as the content, Larry has a knife while holding ‘his mother’, which was actually a cut-out. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England and includes the RSLP Cat. No. The US versions of this cover were much thicker card and even more wear-prone, the backs often have more white than green.

Cover Front: The elderly lady is Larry’s mother, I think is was a cut-out – Larry has a knife – he was institutionalised (twice). This has little to fault bar the moderate sticker residue mark and a mild surface pull below it. No ink or graphic has been removed, and being on a white area, this has far less visual impact. The main graphic is superb and shows only the faintest traces of rim rubbing – the lack of heavy penetrating ring wear is a major bonus on this one. Both records are thick and heavy, thus this cover never wears well. Overall, clean, fresh with hardly any creasing, even with the sticker flaw, which many seem to have anyway, this front sets a high standard.

Cover Back: Great artwork with Larry performing on stage with Zappa and the Mothers. Those red eyes are scary and this back up there with the best I have seen. As close to impossible to find with no ring wear as they get, the green ink is highly intolerant of the thick heavy Reprise records inside. Clean, fresh with minimal creasing and just the odd small mark. The least ring wear I have possibly seen thus far, that including my own, Oh yes, the eyes have it.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside at all, any blemishes minor and faint.

Top Edges: The odd small rub or two on the green back, but few will better these.

Bottom Edges: Very slight rubbing in places but hardly even showing, all edges are straight and unsplit.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and mostly sharp with any thickening or burring very small and little as seen criticalled viewed end-on. Both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Records are stored within these edges.

Spine and Text: Against the odds, this spine is in terrific shape and one of the few I have seen with practically all text present and with hardly any wear. Solid, thick, straight with hardly any compression, also folded square, so the edges meet up flush and parallel. Any darkening of the white surface minimal and I really can consider this spine exceptional in context and nice to see all the text nigh-on fully present with just a tiny clip to the ‘C’ in ‘FISCHER’. All seen in close-up, have you ever seen better?

Corners: Light tip rubs, but as these are mostly white, they show little, fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very solid all-round example of this very fragile, scarce and wear-prone cover, one that will still prove difficult to find significantly better even with the sticker mark evident. Being clean and lacking the ring wear most seem to acquire with a superb intact spine and text, these are all major pluses. However, with the sticker mark, the perfectionists will have to wait to seek out the near impossible. Both unlined white inners are included in better than very good condition. A little creasing and discoloured, but no tears or edge splits (or repairs). These are the originals and a matching pair.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT to EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better still. Beautiful clean playing surfaces and clearly this has not been played many times (surprised?). Very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. This title was rarely purchased by hi-fi connoisseurs. A small superficial mark at the start of side four, any others are ultra fine and faint, even finer than hairlines as seen with utmost scrutiny under bright angled light. Visually super records that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes – ALL OF IT. [I play ALL records I offer in their entirety before submitting to Ebay, unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play even above their high visual grading, and most even above with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a fine detailed production by Zappa. With dialogue and sparse backing, this has few hiding places for blemishes so a little surface sound is almost expected here and there. A little gentle traces heard on side two, but the majority plays beautifully with little else unwanted. I have never seen an official CD issue of this album and for commercial reasons, it is now very unlikely to appear. So the only legal, and best way to hear this album is via two clean, little used records. This is a historic piece, one for collectors of the unusual, it is not likely to be played umpteen times, it is simply not that type of album. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these exceptional records – it’s somewhat hard to explain why, but I really like this album, it’s importance within a Zappa collection cannot be overstated. It’s a gateway into the mind of Larry Fischer and, at times, it’s hardly a comfortable ride. He tells listeners about his mother, his times in the institution, his girl friends (good and bad ones), his music heroes and what he wants from life. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better, a little very gentle surface sound is almost the least you can expect on difficult and quiet material, remember, this is a 45-year-old set, few will be found cleaner, this only sold in very small numbers. Unless total silence is mandatory – and good luck with that – this vintage pair of UK Reprise records are strongly recommended.

End Piece: A genuine one-off album, they simply do not make them like this anymore. If you want ‘different’ and ‘very alternative’, Larry Fischer was certainly that. With no CD version available (to my knowledge), this is likely to be the only way to experience the early Fischer sound. He made a few records for Rhino, but this debut remains his ‘classic’ and has become highly elusive and collectable. Sadly he passed-away in 2011, but his memory will never fade with this in your collection. I conclude this advert by quoting Frank Zappa from the cover’s inner: “Please listen to this album several times before you decide whether or not you like it or what Wild Man Fischer is all about, he has something to say to you, even though you might not want to hear it.”

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
