Description
Bill Evans, pianist on this album, states in the liner notes, "Miles conceived these settings only hours before the recording dates and arrived with sketches which indicated to the group what was to be played. Therefore, you will hear something close to pure spontaneity in these performances. The group had never played these pieces prior to the recordings and I think without exception the first complete performance of each was a "take." Evans continues:, "There is a Japanese visual art in which the artist is forced to be spontaneous. He must paint on a thin stretched parchment with a special brush and black water paint in such a way that an unnatural or interrupted stroke will destroy the line or break through the parchment. Erasures or changes are impossible. These artists must practice a particular discipline, that of allowing the idea to express itself in communication with their hands in such a direct way that deliberation cannot occur. The resulting painting lacks the complex composition & textures of ordinary painting, but it is said that those who see well find something captured that escapes explanation." Miles, Julian "Cannonball" Adderly, John Coltrane, Wynton Kelly, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and James Cobb have concocted a work that occupies a special place in our field of play. For me, it's difficult to imagine our world being the same had this masterwork not come along.
CONDITION: This is an original red & white label promo US mono pressing of the Miles Davis LP Kind of Blue (six eye label Columbia CL 1355; matrix XLP 47324-1G/D). Front cover is in very fine condition: Jay Maisel's full-color photo of Miles Davis still shines with its original luster. There are no marks, stains, writing, cuts, folds, holes or abrasions. What few imperfections I find blend in nicely with the composition. Very very faint ring wear covers only about a sixth or less of the circumference. You have to hold the cover at just the precise angle to spot the tiny bit of other rubbing. A very small bit of cover banging on 3 of the corners; the crinkles on the bottom right cover 3/4 of an inch, but that well blends in due to the darkness of the photograph. Two inch-long semi-creases near the edges; spine has very little wear. A small amount of speckling on the two edges; the only speckle on the spine covers 1/8 inch (at the "MI" of artist's name). The back cover is even better: Nearly free of ring wear. No marks, stains, writing, etc. Just two faint semi-creases of an inch or so at the edges where you barely notice them. Deep-groove label is excellent. No marks, stains writing etc. Perfect-cut center hole is free of wear. Sharp print & admirable color reproduction on both cover & label.
DISC: Record is in fine condition. Platter still retains most of its original sheen. No warps; no skips. Play grading finds very minimal amount of surface noise. A very few light flecks & scratches. Light scratch (1 1/2") covers parts of cuts 1 & 2 on side B which yields a light tick. No sign of wear on run-out grooves. I grade the cover as E ("Excellent") and the disc as V+. ("Very Good-plus").

N- = Record shows no scratches, scuffs, or wear. Plays like new.
E+ = Excellent +, Record shows very light wear, should play like new.
E = Excellent, Record shows light scratches/scuffs which should NOT be audible when played.
E- = Excellent -, Record shows light scratches and scuffs that MAY be audible.
V+ = Very Good +, Record shows moderate scratches and scuffs or wear that WILL be audible.
V = Very Good, Record shows moderate/heavy scratches and scuffs that WILL be audible and MAY skip.
V- =Very Good -, Record shows considerable scratches and wear. Good for a fill-in until a better copy turns up.
P = Poor, What can I say! Record is in poor condition, plays very rough. We will only offer P condition items if they are extremely rare or unusual.
