The Rolling Stones are an English rock band, formed in London in April 1962 by Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica), Ian Stewart (piano), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica, guitar) and Keith Richards (guitar, vocals). Bassist Bill Wyman and drummer Charlie Watts completed the early line-up. R&B and blues cover songs dominated the Rolling Stones' early material, but their repertoire has always included rock and roll. Critic and musicologist Robert Palmer credits the Rolling Stones' endurance and relevance to having been "rooted in traditional verities, in rhythm-and-blues and soul music", while "more ephemeral pop fashions have come and gone". The Rolling Stones have been credited for the higher international regard for the primitive blues typified by Chess Records' artists such as Muddy Waters, who wrote the song Rollin' Stone after which the band is named.

Jones initially led the band, but after teaming as songwriters, Jagger and Richards assumed leadership. By 1969 Jones' diminishing contributions to the band and his inability to tour led to him leaving the band. Three weeks after his departure, Jones drowned. His immediate replacement Mick Taylor stayed with the band until 1974, and was replaced by Ronnie Wood. Wyman retired from the band in 1993; his replacement Darryl Jones has not been made a full member. Stewart was taken from the official line-up in 1963 and continued as the band's road manager and occasional keyboardist until his death in 1985. Since 1982, Chuck Leavell has been the band's primary keyboardist.

Exile on Main St. is the tenth British and twelfth American studio album by The Rolling Stones. Released as a double LP in May 1972, it features a more complex sound than previous albums and draws on many genres including rock and roll, blues, country and soul and calypso. Exile on Main St. was initially greeted with mixed reviews, but it has since become almost universally regarded as a masterpiece. In 2003, the album was ranked number 7 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, the highest of any Stones album on the list.

Exile on Main St. is an album composed of songs written and recorded between 1968 and 1972. Of the earlier songs, the band's singer Mick Jagger said in 2003, "After we got out of our contract with Allen Klein, we didn't want to give him [those earlier tracks]," as they were forced to do with the songs "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses" from Sticky Fingers. Most were recorded between 1969 and 1971 at Olympic Studios and Jagger's Stargroves country house in England during sessions for Sticky Fingers.

By the spring of 1971, the Rolling Stones, who owed more taxes than they could pay, left England before the government would seize their assets. Mick Jagger settled in Paris with his new bride Bianca, and guitarist Keith Richards rented a luxurious villa, Nellcôte, in Villefranche-sur-Mer, near Nice. The other members settled in various places in the south of France. After unsuccessfully looking for a recording studio in France that would be suitable for the next Rolling Stones album, it was decided they would record at Nellcôte using the band's remote recording truck brought in from England.

CONDITION Details:

LP JACKET:

• The Gate-Fold LP jacket is in Near Mint minus condition.
  

• The jacket is completely intact, with NO seam splits. There is some shelf wear, primarily with respect to and seams and corners (bends and wear primarily).

• It has NO drill holes or saw marks of any kind on the jacket. 
  

• There is NO hand writing on the front or back of the jacket (see picture).

• The cover has clean and sharp colors, just gorgeous - see pictures with this listing for more detail. 

The LP (vinyl) itself:

• The LPs are in Near Mint minus condition.
  

• The LPs retain much of the original gloss and sheen!
  

• The records have no serious marks that we could see or hear. We spot play tested the LPs and there was very little noise coming from the vinyl - please note, some audio gear may sound when it plays through the LP as it all depends on the sensitivity of your arm/cartridge combination. The LP may have a couple of very light spider marks that did not affect the playing and enjoyment of the record in any way.
  

• There are NO significant spindle marks on the record labels that we could see.
  

• This is a NEAR Mint minus copy suitable for any LP collection - any picky collector should be happy with this one! A better copy would be very difficult to locate!
