Label Conditions: Both immaculate: ultra clean and highly attractive with just a couple of small and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area. This is a stunning example and the earliest pressing ever issued. The best original I have ever seen or heard - this is a connoisseur’s copy.

Cat Number: SHSP 4008.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 129 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Scarce: not only is this the recognised ‘first pressing’ with the flipbacked cover, most seen and offered are the only slightly later smooth-backs. This copy has the ultimate 1G / 1G mothers and stampers which means this copy was within the first 300 ever pressed and this too in pristine, little short of Mint condition. A somewhat difficult album with quiet passages and highly complex sound, few play quietly. This incredible example plays to perfection with practically no unwanted sounds and zero sound degrading. The ultimate connoisseur audiophile copy. This would not have sold many copies especially when initially issued and remains one of the most elusive Pink Floyd related albums on Harvest. This really has to be seen and heard.

Brief Info: ‘The Body’ was a soundtrack album for a documentary about the human biology. It was narrated by Vanessa Redgrave and Frank Finlay. Again avant garde composer Ron Geesin joins Roger Waters (and Pink Floyd), the last song ‘Give Birth to a Smile’ features The Pink Floyd but are uncredited on the record or sleeve. Issued between the two classic Floyd albums Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother, this is again experimental and at times challenging, and a must-have for fans of the early Floyd sound. This album includes all manner of sounds: with traditional guitars, strings and piano with sounds made by the human body including breathing, slapping, whispering, laughing and some impressive farting. There are vocals by Waters so the Floyd sound is very much present thoughout. Overall the most amazing ultimate first pressed copy you are ever likely to be offered and one of the most difficult within the Harvest catalogue. This has many moments of quietness and I have yet to hear a perfectly quiet pressing of this title – UNTIL NOW – this is as perfect as vinyl ever will be for this title. For looks and a lack of plays this is the VERY best I have ever seen or heard. No irritating crackle, clipping, pops, clicks or distortions. The ultimate upgrade for the most serious collector. 1G / 1G pressings are the ultimate for serious record collectors and few will survive like this. The cover has the elusive flipbacks that were removed very quickly on subsequent pressings and overall, the cover is superb too. The icing on the cake is the Harvest promotional inner is practically Mint as well, how many do you see like this? For those who liked their Floyd a little more experimental and challenging, This Body functions perfectly.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: High: Even though the front is laminated, the blackness is so revealing of creases and marks few will look attractive. The flipbacks are prone to damage and with so few around, finding one with so little wear will prove difficult enough.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++. A single format with a laminated front, and WITH the original flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. The top right back has ‘File under POPULAR : Miscellaneous’.

Lamination & Front: Ruthlessly revealing - this is ruined by heavy creasing, lifting blisters and excessive friction rubs - glad to state this has barely anything like that at all. ALL this laminate is fully adhered with no lifting or blisters at all. Only a small few, tiny edge hairline creases - there are NONE AT ALL away from the sides which is amazing. Only very light traces of friction rubs when held to angled light. The laminate is very shiny (hope my close-up of the spine shows this glossy finish) with the ultimate in clarity and freshness. The artwork is an amazing intense black and the graphic looks incredible. The laminate ends a fraction short of the opening right edge, but the fine exposed strip is clean and totally unworn or chipped. Mild record rim dull again under light but overall, this cover will prove near impossible to find better.

Cover Back: Instantly the most noticeable thing about this back is the lack of ugly ringwear and creasing. The main back panel has little to fault at all. Lovely to see the flipbacks on this one, most offered are later printings with them removed entirely. There are a couple of minor blemishes to these, without them an easy Mint(-) would have been graded. The bottom one near the centre had a light burr-crease which I have neatly readhered so just a light surface crease is now. The top end central had a tiny surface graze - very minor indeed and now showing little. These minor blemishes apart the flipbacks are as fine as the rest of the cover. All neat and with a clean finish, the ends which have the laminate end a fraction short (as all do) have the black strips slightly paler than under the laminate enhancement. Few creases and all solidly stuck down. Do not underestimate just how difficult this original cover is to find that includes them - it adds that extra class that only the first-mades can offer.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no real wear or feathering. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Practically pristine perfect: with lovely thicker than usual shape and great definition, the ends slightly tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate (please see close-up picture).

Corners: All four are neat and retain very fine shape and good definition, odd tiny, very light tip crease.

Cover Summary: A strong all round example of this very elusive, genuine original Harvest cover, one that will prove very difficult to find better. This impressive designed item should please most collectors.

The Inner: This Harvest promotional inner is little short of full Mint and I can remember not seeing a better one than this. Fully lined, no ageing or gum darkening on the seams. Clean, fresh and uncreased with neat top opening and vented bottom corners. No splits, tears or grubbiness. Quite outstanding in every way.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: To grade this Mint(-) is not doing this practically pristine Mint copy full justice, but I will stick to my principle of not grading a played record as Mint even though this fully deserves it. This truly stunning ultimate first pressed Harvest record is world-class specimen standard and will thrill every serious collector. Two beautiful playing surfaces that look new: super clean, shiny, intense black and quite heavily pressed. Visually the best example that will ever be offered, this could be matched but never bettered, it should please all collectors, even the most critical collector. A 1G / 1G o pressing time has forgotten.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: On removing this record, it really occurred to me, it was probably the first time this gem has seen daylight for decades. And not only that, it plays as good as it looks, and this being one of the most difficult albums on this label. Most crackle, often with moderate surface sound but this plays beautifully with any unwanted sounds hardly even registering. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is astonishing with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. As said, I have heard this title a few times before, practically all repressings, and I have yet to hear one that plays silent or even near throughout. This is as close as I feel as it will ever get - CD silence is practically impossible - but this barely played ultimate first pressing trys its best and was a delight from start to finish. This is another classic Floydesque experience. Too strange and weird for some reviewers, this rarely gets the praise it deserves but I love the more challenging music, this has some moments of brilliance and with reference to ‘Atom Heart Mother’ also co-written with Geesin, this again has moments of similarity. An album that would have made the third LP if Ummagumma had been a triple set. Nothing little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, one still to be discovered by many Floyd fans I feel. The lack of annoying pops and clicks is certainly worthy of note and this prime-copy will prove almost impossible to find better and can be very strongly recommended. This has more body and substance than any other example I have ever heard bar none. Do NOT lose this one.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
