Tom Waits' Nighthawks At The Diner turns 50 and re-ups on yellow marble double vinyl via Anti. First released in 1975, the album was recorded at the Record Plant in LA before a small invited audience, folding live intimacy into a studio setting. With a jazz combo behind him, Waits again spun out his tales of gravelly late-night Americana, deadpan humour, and beat-poet observation, polishing yet new repertorial gold. 'Eggs And Sausage', 'Warm Beer And Cold Women', and 'Better Off Without A Wife' sit beside monologues like 'Emotional Weather Report' and 'Nighthawk Postcards', where stage chatter glues the songs and happily entangles the songs, sewing them into timeless place. This anniversary pressing preserves the record's gritty theatre of the perditional moment.
