RARE collectible ORIGINAL 1972 WHITE LABEL PROMOTIONAL with outstanding fliptop gimmix designed cover....a heavy prog psych classic featuring legendary British musicians of the day....

Formed by drummer Jon Hiseman in 1972 after the break up of COLOSSEUM, TEMPEST  were formed when Hiseman brought in an at the time very young guitarist by the name of Allan Holdsworth, with Mark Clark (bass) and Paul Williams (vocals) completing the band. Clark had also been a member of COLOSSEUM. Paul Williams had played with JOHN MAYALL'S BLUESBREAKERS and JUICY LUCY.

Cream's influence on the heavy psych and blues scenes was about as deep as it gets, as evidenced by the seemingly endless throngs of Baker, Bruce and Clapton impressionists during the late 1960s...TEMPEST created a mix with the power of CREAM then utilizing the groups skilled musicians from the progressive scene and bonded a dynamic prog/psych/hardrock sound....

The first song, Gorgon, starts with spacey effects and a nice guitar intro, but then turns into a hard rock song, with nice guitar riffs. The song is more or less Mountain style, with strong vocals (somewhat screamed) and nice guitar and bass interplay. The guitar melodies (solos) are very good.

Foyers of Fun is another energized hard rock song, with a different drumming pattern by Hiseman, which is very good bass and guitar. The guitar soloing in this song is very excellent, showing the talents of the promising Holdsworth, at the time an unknown guitarist.

Dark House is another steamy hard rock song, with strong rhythm section and guitar, This one is a more bluesy slow hard rock song, with better vocal, nice jazzy guitar tone during the main verses and some strong, but subdued keyboard. The song has a more progressive feel, with some complex short instrumental interludes. Brothers is another song a bit less hard, like its predecessor, with a jazzy rhythm section and it has many different parts despite of its length. The main riff and the chorus are heavy-hard, but there are many different parts, some are much more light and with interesting different guitar tones.

Up and Down has a good intro and then comes a simple heavy guitar riff during the main verses, that changes a bit in the bridge. The guitar sound is a bit like Atomic Rooster and the drumming always good and very strong. The guitar solo is excellent and the chorus has a different mood than the main riffs, with nice lead guitar melody.

Grey and Black is a short ballad with keyboards riff and beautiful singing, with nice vocal harmonies and it is one of the highlights of the album and unfortunately rather short.

Stranger is another bluesy hard rock song with a great guitar work by Holdsworth. The main riffs do not have many variations in a bluesy way, but the guitar solo is killer because its speed changes constantly and in a very smooth manner.

The last song, Upon Tomorrow, is another highlight and it is a complex song, with some violin solo in the beginning over a jazzy riff. Then the song changes, with a different jazzy riff, good guitar, bass and drums. The song has many different bits like Dark House and Brothers. The instrumental passage is outstanding, with nice guitar solo. This is the most progressive song of the album.

The album is a nice energized hard rock/prog album with some jazz leanings. The musicianship is outstanding as can be expected with the musicians involved and the quality of the music is top level... the album being a pleasant listen for sure.

CONDITION: The cool flip top designed cover is solid, just very light shelf wear was starting, nothing to be concerned over, light. VG++ ...the dark cover is extremely hard to find even this clean...no split seams, no bends and no writing. Has a promo sticker on the top flip-up flap of cover...
