Description
Here is Victor Monarch 10 inch record #81028, recorded February 1, 1904, released in April 1904, with a back sticker date of January 1, 1904. Enrico Caruso sings "E Lucevan Le Stelle" from Puccini's "Tosca", with piano. This was NEW music at this time. Tosca was first performed in America in 1901. Fabulous singing from Mr. Caruso, as you would expect. The record plays pretty well with moderate surface noise, a little rough at the beginning, and the record is slightly warped, plays without a problem.
This was one of the early American made Red Seal records released by Victor. Note the hefty $2.00 price, an excellent day's pay at that time. There were not a lot of phonographs in America that could play this record in early 1904, and not all phonograph owners were interested in classical music. Caruso made his debut at the New York Metropolitan in fall 1903, which was a great success, so there was interest in Caruso recordings at this time. The record was only available a short time, as Victor rerecorded most songs with an orchestra replacing the piano. 120 years later, what is left, 15 records? Ten? You tell me, excessively rare, if this piece of history interests you, do not pass it up!
