Description
The Victor Dimisich Band- Native Waiter 12" EP (Flying Nun VD-1)
The Victor Dimisich Band included no Victor Dimisish, rather they were a band of Christchurch New Zealand future Flying Nun giants (in my estimation). The Victor Dimisich Band were:Stephen Cogle (later The Terminals lead singer and guitarist)
Peter Stapleton (The Terminals drummer and songwriter and co-founder of Scorched Earth Policy, Dadamah (with Roy Montgomery), Rain, Flies Inside The Sun and Sleep and collaborator with The Dead C's Bruce Russell and Doramaar's Kim Pieters in Pieters/Russell/Stapleton as well as an auxilary member of Bruce Russell and Alastair Galbraith's A Handful Of Dust)
Alan Meek (also of The Builders ... Bill Direen's band)
Mary Heney (member of The Pin Group, Scorched Earth Policy and the micro-legandary Flying Nun band 25 Cents)
Tony O'Grady (who I am unaware of beyond The The Victor Dimisich Band)
While most would go on to other great things, this obscure release (at it's time) is on of the highlights of early Flying Nun record releases and is, really, a magnificent record !
Tracks are:
Side One
1. Native Waiter
2. Thirteenth Floor
Side Two
1. Claude
2. Jonah
3. It's Cold Outside (later covered by Roy Montgomery of The Pin Group on his Siltbreeze Records double 7" and 324 E. 13th Street #7 CD)
Kiwitapes says of:
The Victor Dimisich Band was without a doubt a Christchurch band. 1980 and 1981 were the years of greatest activity. They played a number of 'gigs' at a pub called "The Gladstone", often over a three-night stint, with two other bands on the bill. The 'headlining' spot being rotated each night. Steven Cogle, Allen Meek, Tony O'Grady and Peter Stapleton would generally set up on the stage unassumingly, but once in gear the sound was like a runaway rollercoaster - rushing dips and fragile peaks, but somehow following a chosen direction on the night. Their sole studio legacy was a 5-track EP which came out in 1982 on Flying Nun. This recording demonstrates (with rare aural clarity) the genuine songwriting prowess of Steven Cogle and Peter Stapleton.
Doledrums blog says of The Victor Dimisich Band:
Few musical family trees within New Zealand music are as artistically rewarding as the Victor Dimisich Band/Scorched Earth Policy/Terminals trifecta, and that's not even mentioning the psychedelic twang of Brian Crook's Renderers. The Victor Dimisich Band was the first, releasing a single 12" EP within its lifetime. Containing the spellbinding, swirling intensity of "Native Waiter," the 1982 self-titled release remains a classic of the brooding Christchurch scene that counted the Pin Group and Bill Direen's Bilders among its legendary roster. The Victor Dimisich Band featured Stephen Cogle and Peter Stapleton in their earliest recorded partnership; the haunted baritone of the former is unmistakable, while the propulsive, thundering drums of the latter offer a perfect accompaniment to Victor Dimisich's tales of quiet, droning desperation. In 1988, Xpressway released a live Victor Dimisich cassette called 'The Mekong Delta Blues.' 'My Name is K' collects select tracks from this profoundly lo-fi document and the original EP in its entirety.
David Auerbach on Ah Online said:
Roy Montgomery said that the Victor Dimisich Band was "comprised of people who were not well-adjusted socially." That might go a ways to explaining why these 1981-82 Christ-church, New Zealand recordings seem almost divorced from the rest of the world. While new wave, European avant-garde, and the last exponents of punk were doing their thing up north, the VDB was dealing in a fragile garage sound recalling only the Velvet Underground, topped off by the ghostly, morose vocals of one Stephen Cogle, who just happened to possess one of the greatest, purest voices ever.
Cogle and drummer Peter Stapleton would go on to start the Terminals and issue three of the best albums of all time. On this compilation of their five-song Flying Nun EP and a live Xpressway tape, they're joined by the Bilders' Allan Meek, who brings very trebly organ and frantic guitar. The sound is livelier and less brooding than the Terminals', but the general rule is slow-motion quasi-"pop" like "It's Cold Outside" and "Jonah," with shambling guitar, steady, minimal drumming, and Cogle's unearthly crooning.
The Victor Dimisich Band dissipated soon after the EP, so the rerelease of these tracks is a small miracle, owing mostly to the dedication of Stapleton and his tiny label, Medication. Like most of the stuff I've reviewed in these pages, the Victor Dimisich Band is not for all tastes--it requires an appreciation for utterly serious, single-minded intent channeled through the unlikeliest of means. But I have absolute faith that, like the Monks, the Creation, Slapp Happy, Subway Sect, and a few dozen other crucial bands, the VDB's music will be around in 20 years, being played by the next real underground.
