If you grew up during the 1960s, some of your best memories are probably of that era's music. By 1964, the music world was changed forever with the arrival of The Beatles and their hit singles, "She Loves You" and "I Want to Hold Your Hand," which topped the charts that year. But if you grew up in Mendota, you might remember 1964 as the year another very popular group, the Vanguards, hit the local scene.
Like many homegrown bands of the time, the Vanguards included a group of local guys, Benny Sutton, Tony Martin, Gary Fitzgerald, Jack Wagner and Jim Larkin, who got together and began making music. The popular group played at Mendota High School as well as other area high schools and youth centers.
