G.BIZET-R.SHCHEDRIN CARMEN "MOSCOW VIRTUOSI" CHAMBER ORCHESTRA CHAMBER ENSEMBLE OF ARMENIA PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE(V.GRISHIN,S.VETROV,A.OGORODNIKOV,S.PROZOROV,V.SHUBINSKY) CONDUCTOR VLADIMIR SPIVAKOVA genial opera, Carmen of Georges Bizet (based on Mérimée's novel), met the genius of Rodion Shchedrin and inspired him a rich and colorful orchestrated music for a ballet dedicated to his wife, Maya Plisetskaya. The fatalistic and hedonistic character of Carmen as well as her fascinating drama was perfectly and entirely captured by Rodion Shchedrin. His brilliant music was composed in 1967 and, as well as other ballets of Shchedrin, acquired an independent life as a symphonic concert masterpiece. An excerpt from the LP cover (F. Fahmi) describes the relationship between this symphonic suite and its interprets: “Great artistry and high emotional tension generally typical of Shchedrin in Carmen Suite are revealed with an amazingly striking force. It seems that this has been well understood by the performers - Chamber Orchestra “Moscow Virtuosi”, the Chamber Ensemble of Armenia, Percussion Ensemble (V. Grishin, S, Vetrov, A. Ogorodnikov, S. Prozorov, V. Shubinski) and conductor Vladimir Spivakov, who have succeeded in projecting the essence of this work with great musical honesty.
In Spivakov’s inspired interpretation we sense exultation, fervor, the enchanting beauty of music and the understanding of its source. The recording captures with the plasticity, flexibility of sound and nuances, noble poise, powerful rhythms, the atmosphere of fatality predicting the tragic denouement ...”
