'The Velvet Underground' (the band),...

The Velvet Underground was an American rock band first active, in various incarnations, from 1965 to 1973.

Their best-known members were Lou Reed and John Cale, who both went on to find success as solo artists. Although never commercially successful while together, the band is often cited by many critics as one of the most important and influential groups of their era and to many future musicians.

The band's music and lyrics challenged conventional societal standards of the time, and broke ground for other musicians to do the same. The band favored experimentation, and also introduced a nihilistic outlook through some of their music.

Their outsider attitude and experimentation has since been cited as pivotal to the rise of punk rock and, later, alternative rock.

...the first professional line up of The Velvet Underground, included Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, John Cale,  and Maureen "Moe" Tucker; with Nico, who would occasionally sing lead with the band at the instigation of their mentor and manager, Andy Warhol. Nico sang lead on three of the album's tracks—"Femme Fatale", "All Tomorrow's Parties" and "I'll Be Your Mirror"—and back up on "Sunday Morning". In 1966, as the album was being recorded, this was also the line up that performed live as a part of Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable.

...a German singer-songwriter, fashion model, actress, and Warhol Superstar, she is renowned for both her tenure in The Velvet Underground and for her work as a solo artist. While she is most prominently known for her musical work, she also had a small handful of film roles, including a bit part in Frederico Fellini's acclaimed 1960 film La Dolce Vita. A close friend and artistic collaborator with Andy Warhol, she also starred in various roles in his experimental art films, most notably in 1966's Chelsea Girls, after which she named her solo debut album.

Also, Warhol has been the subject of numerous retrospective exhibitions, books, and feature and documentary films. He coined the expression "15 minutes of fame".

John Cale, the classically trained pianist and viola player of the Velvet Underground, once said of this record: "We were trying to do a Phil Spector thing with as few instruments as possible". It was no idle boast. Much of what we take for granted in rock would not exist without this New York band or its seminal debut,The Velvet Underground and Nico: the ‘sexless’ sexuality of glitter; punk's raw power; the blackened-riff howl of grunge and noise rock. It is a record of fearless breadth and lyric depth. Singer-songwriter Lou Reed documented  carnal desire and drug addiction with a pop wisdom he learned as a song-factory composer for Pickwick Records. Cale introduced the power of pulse and drone (from his work in early minimalism); guitarist Sterling Morrison and drummer Maureen Tucker played with tribal force; Nico, a German vocalist briefly added to the band by manager Andy Warhol, brought an icy femininity to the heated weariness and dissatisfaction with life found in Reed's songs. Rejected as nihilistic (nothing) by the love crowd in '67, the Banana Album (so named for its Warhol-designed cover), is the most prophetic rock album ever made.

CONDITION OF THE RECORD:

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, we grade ALL records under a strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight).

• WE GRADE THE VINYL AS VG. CAUTION>The vinyl is NOT in MINT or NEAR-MINT condition. Nevertheless, the vinyl is in very nice playing condition for this grade. There are some surface marks and abrasions, mostly light, although some may be longer than 1.1/4 inches (1 inch = 2.5 centimeters). Vinyl shows numerous small scuffs and scratches which are better seen under bright light and perhaps plays with light and tolerable, BUT AUDIBLE, scattered light surface noise and occasional pops and clicks. These marks CANNOT be felt by fingernail. For more information please inquire.
• The record is pressed on a beautiful high quality, semi-flexible vinyl. Usually, the sound on such vinyl pressings is full-bodied, bright and rich in quality.

CONDITION OF THE 'GATEFOLD' COVER:

THE COVER IS GRADED VERY GOOD+ 

The following flaws or imperfections are found on the cover:

• Cover shows very little ring impression (back only); on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring impression (back only) wear as <1.
•  
• Cover shows very little corner TIP wear (TIPS ONLY); on a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of corner TIP wear as 1.
•  
• Cover shows very little spine and seam wear (with spine indented towards front just slightly/top seam peeling just slightly/bottom seam showing just a 'beginning' very small split; not significant ~ many will not see these) - probably due to storage.  On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of spine and seam wear as a 1>.
•  
• Cover (white), shows little jacket wear (little fading/'yellow on white'), a couple of small intials are in the upper left corner (probably a previous owner - not significant), . On a scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of jacket fading as a 1>.
•  
• Cover (back), shows a very small piece of clear scotch tape (easily removable) with small initials;(please see pictures) 

Just the obvious fading, very little ring wear, very few spine wrinkles and little spine peeling which produced 'an antique' of a great cover.
