Description
Up for auction is an original, ultra rare 1968 Canadian 1st pressing of the Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat, Verve V6-5046. Dark blue and silver label, with STEREOPHONIC under the Verve logo. Skull cover. Back cover has corrected credits ( HERE SHE COMES NOW, Lou Reed Guitar ), and fails to mention Andy Warhol. Reads at rear bottom, "MANUFACTURED AND DISTRIBUTED IN CANADA BY QUALITY RECORDS LIMITED -- 380 BIRCHMOUNT ROAD, TORONTO, ONTARIO.". This particular copy is featured as the example photo for this album, on the extensive Velvet Underground online database, Olivier Landemaine's THE VELVET UNDERGROUND WEB PAGE. We know how hard American 1st editions are to find, and it would be hard to even speculate on how few of these copies were ever pressed. I have never even HEARD of another original stereo copy. Sound and stereo quality is noticeably far superior to that of original US copies, especially on "The Gift", which sounds like it is in ( or at least very very close to) true stereo, with minimal or no "bleeding". I have graded both cover and disk a VG+, and I feel that is being conservative. The front cover is glossier than the photos show, however their is a little ring wear ( I would consider it pretty minor, especially since the White Light/White Heat album's black front is known to highlight wear more than most other albums). The back cover is clean, as I have tried to represent in the photos. Their is seam and corner wear, however NO splits. Disk is glossy on both sides with mostly light scratches and scuffing, which does very little to affect the superior sound of this disc.
