Loaded was the fourth album from The Velvet Underground, and there's little doubt it's their most accessible. At this point, the band leaned more fully into the idea of being a rock 'n' roll outfit rather than pushing boundaries. "Leaned" might be more accurate than "embraced", given that their label, Atlantic, was keen for hits. In other words, you won't find much here about illicit drug use or tales of S&M, nor many mind-bending excursions into drone. Instead, what you get is a collection of finely crafted songs that are far more immediate and approachable. With Doug Yule taking on a more central role (handling vocals on several tracks and even contributing drums), the band moved in a slightly different direction. This was the album "loaded" with hits, and while that didn't quite materialise (aside from 'Sweet Jane'), you can see what Lou Reed was aiming for with 'Rock & Roll', 'Cool It Down', and 'Who Loves The Sun'. There's still a touch of subversion, though, in the jangling oddity of 'Lonesome Cowboy Bill' and the barbed lyrics of 'New Age'. Loaded may be the album that sounds least like The Velvet Underground, but it remains packed with fantastic songs.
