HE WAS REALLY SAYIN’ SOMTHIN’ (1964)
The Velvelettes didn't record many 45s down at Motown, but the few that they did are really something. The group were centered around sisters Millie and Carol Gill, plus their cousins Bertha and Nora Barbee, as well as Betty Kelly. They hit the charts three times with three singles, and this is the middle one.
They cut the song "He Was Really Saying Something" in a session on November 2, 1964, but the version wasn't quite right so they revisited the song again in another session on December 7. This time, it was just right. The 45 was spun out on the new V. I. P. Records label and became their biggest hit.
For those younger collectors, you might know this as a tune done by the UK band The Fun Boy Three (with Bananarama) back in the mid '80s.
This original single is flipped with "Throw A Farewell Kiss."
