Label/Format: Atlantic - original red and maroon (plum) format (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both in supreme conditions: very clean, fresh and attractive with only very light and faint spindle marks (two or three each side only) and no wear around the hole area. This record from a collection of barely played records and being a mono copy, this is just the way the audiophile listener wants them.

Cat Number: 587100.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 139 grams. A very good typical weight for this era.

Rarity: Scarce: not a big seller and by this time, the mono format was on the decline.

Brief Info: A short lived US psychedelic-rock band with a difference: their debut album was an ambitious minor classic. This, the follow up was even more ambitious and somewhat disturbing, I have never heard another album quite like this one. A conceptual collage piece in four phases, that cleverly blends classic pop songs, including Beatles with some original music. Side two comprises historical dialogue from famous world leaders including Churchill, Hitler and Roosevelt all blended into a dark psych collage - this was far too arty and extreme for many - but I love it! Dare to be different I say and this album certainly is just that. A very downbeat and somewhat scary montage of sound with very stark messages, this has to be one of the bleakest albums of the era. It did not sell well, even in the US it failed to live up to the promise of the debut in terms of units sold. The album concludes with an interview, the band member admits he hopes the future will be less bleak, but remember at this time the US was at war in Vietnam. This copy on offer is a scarce UK mono copy on plum - you can imagine how difficult this one will be to find, especially one barely played and this record looks almost like new and plays the same. A mono record that plays just as it was issued and that’s little short of perfect, an unusual and bold thing to state, but true here. The cover has faired better than some I have seen as this always seems to have considerable laminate issues in the form of lifting or creasing, this has little of either and a copy that will prove hard to find much better, the record especially so.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Moderate (in theory), but most all I have seen have been creased and severely dulled with often large blisters.

Cover Grade and Format: Near Excellent: a single laminated cover that was printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day & Co Ltd.

Lamination – Front & Back: The laminate is solid, clear with a fine shine retained. Under light, some dulling is seen but I have yet to ever seen one without any. A few surface creases but only one in the near moderate category on the front, the back has few at all. Any non-adhesion areas are very small and few and overall, this difficult and revealing cover will prove quite hard to find much better as an original.

Top Edge: Practically unworn.

Bottom Edge: Similar again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear or feathering and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. A couple of tiny surface chips only, one of which appears on one digit of the catalogue number. Still the best spine I have seen on this unforgiving cover.

Corners: A little small tip rubbing to the spine pair but little else and very fine to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A splendid overall example and with a superb, barely played mono record inside, this will take a fair amount of beating. This vintage cover should please many collectors.

The Inner: The Polydor style lined inner is included in fine condition and is dated coded 099. All evidence suggests one of the very last mono’s ever pressed. The lining clear and intact as are the edges. A couple of creases and a little wrinkle but guaranteed original, not swapped, in real terms, it has aged little.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: A superb Mint(-) mono record with two ultra clean playing surfaces and a lovely visual copy. With super shine, intense blackness and very solidly pressed. The spindle traces strongly suggest very few plays and if a much better UK mono version of the album can be found, I would love to see it. A difficult album so finding one this clean is a real achievement, there are few surface blemishes at all and visually a super record that should please most-all collectors and it could prove a significant upgrade.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant psychedelic record, still so sadly neglected I feel, plays up to its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Exactly what is required on this one, this has moments of near silence with nothing happening and this complex and challenging record excels. Just remember what this could have been played on and the resulting damage that could have occurred to these grooves. A piledriver mono needle grinding down into this record almost makes me cringe to think about, but being honest, this is what it was designed to be played on. Few mono copies will even get near this one, let alone outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp with no clipping or noise from either channel, all sound fully focused and sharp. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove near impossible to find better and the record can be unreservedly recommended.

You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional thick boxes (NOT Mailers or Cruciforms, these do not offer maximum protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
